True to Beatrice’s word, they arrived at nine-thirty the next morning, leaving me just enough time to call my boss, only to find out she had already spoken to Beatrice about my taking time off. My boss had said she felt that a vacation was the best thing for me. I didn’t know how I felt about others deciding what I needed, but for the time being, I was trying to roll with it. Three brisk knocks announced their arrival. I looked around as I walked toward the door, wincing at the state of my place.
