They raced between two towering pillars of the great bridge: each massive enough to withstand the flow of the river and the serpents and just about any natural calamity. Three times she broke the surface, arching into the light. Each time he flew after her, skimming through the waters as he continued his work. She lashed at him, but each time he skipped clear of her attack, only to resume his own. He reshaped her, molding her body afresh, remaking the very idea of her. He had sung her song in the first of days and now the song would have a different melody. The chase and the struggle lasted the best part of a day.
