📖 Forbidden Fling: Chapter 18 Aurora’s hands shook as she shoved clothes into a small backpack, the cheap motel room around her closing in like a cage. Ben was outside, waiting, his car running, headlights cutting through the darkness. She could see his silhouette through the thin curtains, pacing, checking his phone, glancing up at her window every few seconds. She zipped the bag, clutching it to her chest as she took one last look at the room. She was tired of running. But she was more afraid of what would happen if she stayed. --- She opened the door, Ben’s head snapping up as he jogged toward her, relief flooding his face as he pulled her into a hug. “It’s okay,” he whispered against her hair, his arms strong and warm. “You’re safe now. I promise.” Aurora let herself believe it for a moment, sinking into his embrace, breathing in his scent, letting the steady beat of his heart calm the chaos inside her. --- They drove through the city in silence, the neon lights blurring past, the streets empty in the late hour. Ben’s hand rested on her thigh, grounding her, reminding her that she wasn’t alone. She stared out the window, her mind racing. What if Liam followed them? What if Marcus found out she was leaving? What if she never stopped running? --- “Where are we going?” she asked softly, breaking the silence. Ben glanced at her, his eyes warm and steady. “A friend’s cabin, outside the city. No one will find us there. You can rest, Aurora. You can finally breathe.” She nodded, clutching the straps of her bag, trying to ignore the fear coiling in her stomach. --- They pulled into a gas station on the outskirts of the city, the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead as Ben filled the tank. Aurora slipped out of the car, needing air, needing space. She leaned against the cool metal, looking up at the stars, trying to remember who she was before all of this. Before Marcus. Before Liam. Before the club. Before the darkness. --- She didn’t see the car pull in behind them. Didn’t see the figure step out, moving like a shadow, silent and hungry. --- “Aurora.” Her blood turned to ice. She turned slowly, her breath catching in her throat. Liam stood there, a twisted smile on his lips, his eyes glinting in the harsh light. His face was bruised from Marcus’s beating, a bandage across his cheek, but it only made him look more dangerous. “Miss me, baby?” he crooned, stepping closer. Aurora stumbled back, her back hitting the car, her hands scrambling for the handle. “Get away from me,” she whispered, her voice shaking. --- Liam’s smile widened as he stepped closer, ignoring the shouts of a clerk inside the gas station, ignoring the world around them. “I told you, you can’t hide from me,” he hissed, grabbing her arm, pulling her away from the car. “Let me go!” she screamed, fighting, kicking, clawing at his arm. Ben appeared out of nowhere, tackling Liam, the two of them crashing to the ground in a tangle of limbs and curses. “Run, Aurora!” Ben shouted, punching Liam in the face. But she couldn’t move. She was frozen, her body shaking, her breath coming in short, panicked gasps. Liam’s eyes found hers, even as Ben held him down, blood dripping from his mouth. “This isn’t over,” he growled, his eyes wild. --- A black SUV screeched into the parking lot, tires screaming against the pavement. The door flew open, and Marcus stepped out, his eyes burning with fury as he took in the scene. Without hesitation, he grabbed Liam, yanking him off Ben, throwing him against the hood of the car, his fist colliding with Liam’s face over and over, blood splattering across the windshield. “Marcus, stop!” Aurora screamed, tears streaming down her face. But Marcus didn’t stop. His rage was a storm, unstoppable, consuming, fueled by the sight of Aurora’s fear, the bruises on her skin, the blood on Liam’s hands. --- Ben pulled Aurora back, shielding her as Marcus continued to beat Liam, his breath coming in harsh, ragged gasps, his knuckles raw and bloody. “Marcus, you’ll kill him!” Ben shouted. Marcus froze, his chest heaving, his hands dripping with blood. He turned, his eyes locking on Aurora, softening as they met hers. “Aurora,” he whispered, taking a step toward her. She backed away, shaking her head, her tears blurring the lights around them. “Don’t,” she sobbed. “Please, don’t.” --- The police sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder, closer. Marcus glanced at Liam, who was slumped against the car, barely conscious, blood dripping from his mouth. He turned back to Aurora, his eyes pleading. “Come with me. Now.” Ben stepped forward, blocking Marcus. “She’s not going anywhere with you.” Marcus’s jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing. “You can’t protect her.” “I can try,” Ben snapped, pulling Aurora closer. Aurora looked between them, the chaos around her blurring as the sirens grew louder. Marcus. Ben. Liam. Who was she? Who did she want to be? The police cars screeched into the parking lot, lights flashing, doors opening as officers stepped out, shouting commands. Aurora’s world tilted, the noise drowning out everything as she sank to her knees, her hands pressed to her ears, her screams tearing from her throat. Hands grabbed her, pulling her away. She didn’t know if it was Ben. She didn’t know if it was Marcus. All she knew was that she was tired. Tired of running. Tired of being afraid. Tired of being someone else’s possession. As the officers cuffed Liam, as Marcus and Ben shouted over each other, as the world around her fell into chaos— Aurora closed her eyes. And let go.
