The Door That Should'nt Open

835 Words
The sound didn't stop. That was the problem. Kael Verin stood at the edge of the academy grounds, staring at the stone beneath his feet. It was still there–faint, slow, steady. Breathing. He waited. One second. Two. Ten. Still there. Not his imagination. Not the wind. Something below him was alive. He lifted his head slightly and glanced back. The academy behind him was loud–voices, footsteps, training. Normal. But ahead of him–nothing. Silence. Kael stepped forward. No one called out. No one stopped him. No one noticed. The further he walked, the quieter everything became. First the voices faded. Then the wind. Then even the faint hum of mana disappeared. That was wrong. Mana didn't vanish. It weakened, scattered–but it was always there. Here, it wasn't. Kael slowed, not out of fear, but thought. If mana didn't exist here… then whatever was below wasn't part of the system. A narrow path appeared ahead–broken, almost hidden beneath dust and stone. He hadn't seen it before, but now it was there. He followed it. Each step felt heavier–not on his body, but on the space around him. Like the world itself was resisting him. Or recognizing him. The path ended at a door. Kael stopped. It wasn't large. Not impressive. Just old stone, worn down by time. But it didn't belong. Markings covered its surface. Not like academy runes–these were uneven, twisted, wrong. Kael stepped closer. The sound was clearer now. Breathing. Right behind the door. He raised his hand. For a moment, he paused–not from hesitation, but because something in him recognized this. Not the place. The feeling. Then he touched it. The markings flickered–then died. Not fading. Not dimming. Gone. Cracks spread across the door, slow at first, then faster. Deep underground, something reacted. A low sound echoed upward–metal shifting, chains tightening. Kael pulled his hand back slightly. "…What is this?" The door opened. No sound. No movement. One moment it was closed, the next it wasn't. Cold air rushed past him–not wind, not natural. Just empty. Kael stepped inside. Darkness swallowed him completely. No light. No source. But he could still see. That was wrong. The space was larger than it should be. Stone pillars stretched into the distance, carved with the same markings. Chains hung from above–huge, heavy, ancient. Each link layered with seals again and again, as if whoever built this place didn't trust it to hold. Kael took a step forward. The breathing stopped. Silence. Then– "You came." The voice wasn't in the air. It wasn't around him. It was inside him. Kael didn't react. "Who are you?" A pause. "…Not who. What remains." Something shifted in the darkness. Not fully. Just enough to feel it. Kael narrowed his eyes. "…You were sealed." A faint reaction. Not surprise. Recognition. "And you… were not supposed to return." The same words. Again. Kael stepped forward. The chains moved slightly, a faint metallic strain echoing through the chamber. "…What am I?" Silence followed. Long. Heavy. Then a low sound—almost a laugh. "You don't remember." Something tightened in Kael's chest. That same feeling again–like something was there, just out of reach. "I asked you a question." The air changed instantly. Sharp. The presence shifted. No longer watching. Judging. "And I am deciding if you deserve an answer." For the first time, Kael felt resistance. Not fear. Not danger. Just something pushing back against him. Then everything stopped. A pulse hit the chamber. Hard. The markings lit up–not fading this time, but warning. Above them, footsteps echoed. Fast. More than one. Kael looked up. "They found you." The chains tightened violently, metal grinding against stone. "Leave." Kael didn't move. "Not until you answer." The pressure increased. The darkness shifted. A shape appeared. Massive. Coiled. Watching. Two eyes opened. Gold. Ancient. For a moment, Kael didn't move. "Then listen." The ground trembled. "You are not human." Silence. "You are what they failed to erase." The words settled deep. Something inside Kael reacted. Not fully. But enough. A flicker. Sky. Fire. Wings. Gone. The chamber exploded with force. Kael was thrown backward. The door behind him slammed shut–then burst open again, hurling him out. He hit the ground hard, air knocked from his lungs. The door sealed instantly behind him. Silent. Still. Like nothing had happened. Footsteps reached him seconds later. Instructor Veyr. And others. Armed. Alert. Too late. Veyr stopped in front of him, eyes locked. "You." A pause. "What did you just open?" Kael pushed himself up slowly, dust falling from his clothes. His expression didn't change. But his eyes– did. "…I don't think it was meant to stay closed." Silence followed. Heavy. Unsettling. Behind the sealed door, deep beneath the academy- those golden eyes remained open. Watching. Waiting. And for the first time in centuries– they were no longer alone.
