Rain hammered against the windows as Elena paced the living room, her arms folded tightly over her chest. She had told him to leave. She had expected him to leave. But when she stepped out of the bathroom ten minutes later, she found him still sitting on her couch—head down, hands clasped, completely still.
As if he belonged there.
“Why are you still here?” Elena demanded, her voice sharper than she intended.
The man lifted his head slowly. His eyes met hers—dark, steady, strangely familiar. “Because,” he said quietly, “you haven’t asked the real question yet.”
Elena’s heartbeat stumbled. “What question?”
“Why I came here.”
She tightened her grip on the towel she was holding. “Fine. Why did you come?”
He inhaled deeply, as though preparing for something painful. “Because you were in danger.”
Elena laughed, the sound brittle. “Danger? Look, I don’t know you. You appear out of nowhere, you collapse in front of my door, and now you’re talking like you know my life? No. Tell me the truth.”
He didn’t flinch. “I am telling the truth.”
Lightning cracked outside, illuminating his face. Elena noticed again—no injuries, no cuts, nothing to explain why he had passed out. Just exhaustion. And something else… like he carried a weight too heavy for words.
She sat down across from him, trying to steady herself. “You said your name is Adrian, right?”
“Yes.”
“Adrian what?”
He hesitated. “Just Adrian.”
“You don’t have a last name?”
His eyes were unreadable. “Not one I can use.”
Elena exhaled loudly. “Okay. This is ridiculous. I should call the police.”
“If you call them,” Adrian said softly, “you won’t survive the night.”
Elena froze.
“What did you just say?”
He leaned forward, his voice low but calm, like he already knew she wouldn’t believe him—and yet he needed her to. “You were followed today. From the old bookstore to the train platform. And then again to the street behind your apartment.”
Elena’s stomach sank. “How would you even know that?”
“Because,” Adrian said, gaze tightening, “I’ve been watching him. And I’ve been watching you.”
The room went silent.
For a full five seconds Elena couldn’t breathe. “So you admit you’ve been following me?”
“Yes.”
“That doesn’t make me feel any safer!”
Adrian didn’t apologize. Instead, he looked toward the window, scanning the street. “Elena, please listen. Someone has been searching for you for weeks. Someone dangerous. I’m trying to keep him from reaching you.”
“And why would anyone search for me?” she snapped.
“I don’t know.”
His honesty—unexpected, unpolished—threw her off. He wasn’t lying. At least… she didn’t think he was.
“Then what do you know?” she pressed.
Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Only this: he marked you. And once someone is marked, he doesn’t stop.”
Elena swallowed hard. “You’re scaring me.”
“I know,” he murmured. “But I’d rather scare you than let you walk blindly into what’s coming.”
Before she could respond, a loud bang echoed from the hallway outside.
Elena jolted.
Adrian shot to his feet with instinctive, lethal speed. “Get away from the door.”
Her pulse hammered. “It’s probably just—”
“Move,” he said, voice sharp.
She scrambled behind the couch as Adrian approached the door silently. Another bang shook the frame. Then—footsteps. Slow. Intentional.
Someone was standing right outside her apartment.
Adrian pressed a finger to his lips.
The footsteps paused… then started retreating down the hall.
Only when the elevator dinged faintly did Adrian step back.
Elena emerged shakily. “What was that?”
“Scent test,” Adrian whispered. “He wanted to know if you were inside.”
“Scent?” Elena stared at him. “What are you talking about? Nobody can smell through walls—”
“You don’t know what he is.”
“Then tell me!”
Adrian’s throat bobbed as he struggled for the right words. “I will. But not here. We don’t have much time.”
He extended a hand. “Please, Elena. Come with me. I can keep you alive tonight. That’s all I can promise.”
Her hand trembled above his.
Her entire life was a quiet routine—work, books, silence. And now a stranger with impossible knowledge was telling her she was being hunted.
Elena closed her eyes.
For some reason… she took his hand.
