Chapter 5:The Rival’s Flame

Training was different today. Kael had taken her deeper into the woods. Past the streams. Past the marked stones. To where the trees grew too close together and the light barely touched the ground. He said it was a sacred place — only wolves with the mark were allowed here. Elara barely had time to ask why. Because that’s when she arrived. Selene. Tall. Regal. Skin like golden fire. Eyes like ice. And a presence that made Elara’s throat close before she even spoke. Kael tensed the second he saw her. “Not now,” he muttered. Selene smiled, slow and sharp. “Now’s perfect.” Elara stepped forward, confused. “Who is—?” “She’s from the Emberclaw Pack,” Kael cut in. “Beta bloodline. Doesn’t matter.” “Oh, but it does,” Selene said, circling slowly. “Because I trained for this role. I earned it. And now you bring in her?” “She didn’t ask for the mark.” “No one does. That’s the point. The Moon chooses. But she’s not ready. She doesn’t know anything about our laws, our ways, or our war.” “She’s learning.” “She’s weak.” Elara’s fingers curled at her sides. “Say that again.” Selene laughed — rich and cruel. “You’re not Luna. You’re not a leader. You’re a broken human girl with a scar you don’t deserve.” Kael stepped between them. “That’s enough.” But Elara pushed past him. “Let her talk.” Kael’s jaw clenched. “Don’t do this.” Elara’s eyes never left Selene’s. “She wants a fight? She can have one.” The fight was short. Too short. Elara’s body was still sore from yesterday’s training. Her muscles screamed with every move. Selene moved like wind — like she’d done this since birth. Elara got in one solid strike — a twist, a shove, a graze across Selene’s cheek that drew blood. But then Selene swept her leg and sent Elara crashing to the ground. Wind knocked out. Chest heaving. Selene stood over her, not even breathing hard. “Still weak,” she spat. Kael moved toward them, fury burning in his eyes, but Elara lifted her hand. “No.” She stood. Shaking. Bleeding from her elbow. But she stood. And something in her eyes made Selene pause. Not fear. Recognition. Like she’d seen that fire before. “Do it again,” Elara said, voice low. “I dare you.” Selene narrowed her eyes… then smiled. “You’ll break soon enough.” And with that, she vanished into the trees. Kael helped Elara sit. “You should’ve waited.” “She needed to see I wasn’t scared.” He shook his head. “She doesn’t care about fear. She wants power.” “I’m not trying to take her place,” Elara said. “I’m just trying to find mine.” Kael looked at her, rain still dripping from his lashes, that unreadable expression on his face again. “You already have it,” he said softly. “They just don’t know yet.” Later that night, Elara sat alone on her porch, a blanket around her shoulders, hair damp with sweat. The bruises ached. But they weren’t the part that hurt. It was the feeling in her chest. Like something old was trying to wake up inside her. Something wild. Something sacred. And far off in the woods, she heard it again. A howl. But this time… it wasn’t a threat. It was a summons
