EPISODE 4: A Chain Reaction

1129 Words
The 37 Jiang-Credits in my phone’s digital wallet felt like embers burning a hole in my pants pocket. In the Lower District, having cash without a corresponding Efficiency Report is a grave sin. The city’s surveillance system—the “State” app—works like a shark that can sniff out a single drop of blood from dozens of kilometers away. As soon as there’s an unusual spike in liquidity in a lower-class citizen’s account, the algorithm immediately flags it as illegal activity. I walked quickly through the narrow alleys of the Lower District. Acid rain began to fall gently, dripping from the gaps between the giant pipes hanging from the concrete ceiling of the Central District. The raindrops smelled of zinc and stung my bare cheeks, but I didn’t care. I had only one destination tonight: the “Sheng” Self-Help Clinic in Sector 4. The clinic stood amid piles of used shipping containers and illegal grocery stores. It smelled like a mixture of cheap medical alcohol and nearly expired antiseptics. As soon as I pushed open the frosted glass door, an old iron bell chimed softly. “Xia?” Dr. Sheng—a middle-aged man with thick dark circles under his eyes and a yellowed lab coat—looked up from his desk. “You’re back again? I already told you—if you don’t bring 100 Credits by tomorrow morning, I’ll have to disconnect your father’s breathing apparatus. I have no choice. The district keeps squeezing my quota.” My breath caught in my throat. I stepped toward his desk and tapped the cracked screen of my phone against the clinic’s payment scanner. “I’ll pay the first installment first,” I said, trying to steady my voice so it wouldn’t tremble. “30 Credits. Put it toward Dad’s Efficiency Report stabilizer medication account.” Dr. Sheng looked at me suspiciously. His small eyes shifted from my screen to my face. “30 Credits? Where did you get that much money in just a few hours? You didn’t sell your organs on the black market, did you?” “It’s clean money,” I lied firmly. “I got an overtime bonus from the logistics warehouse.” The old man let out a long sigh, unwilling to ask any further questions. In Jiangluo, asking too many questions is the fastest way to die young. He processed the transaction. [TRANSACTION SUCCESSFUL: -30 JIANG-CREDITS] [REMAINING BALANCE: 7 JIANG-CREDITS] [SHENG CLINIC NOTIFICATION: OXYGEN TANK VALIDITY EXTENDED +24 HOURS] The tightness in my chest instantly eased a little. Twenty-four hours. I’d managed to buy one more day for Dad. But just as I was about to turn back toward Dad’s treatment room, the screen of The Ledger floating in my left retina suddenly flashed a blinding neon green light. The floating data graphics abruptly turned bright red, displaying a warning symbol in the shape of a lightning bolt. [SYSTEM WARNING: A MACRO MARKET ANOMALY HAS OCCURRED IN THE CENTRAL DISTRICT!] [ANOMALY TYPE: ILLEGAL SHORT SALE OF JINGHUA CORP PROPERTY BY SENIOR ANALYST (CHEN RAN)] [CHAIN REACTION IMPACT ON LOWER DISTRICTS: PRICES OF X-5 LOGISTICS PARTS HAVE RISEN DRASTICALLY (+300%) DUE TO PANIC OVER GLOBAL INVENTORY MONITORING!] My eyes widened. What on earth is this? A name flashed across The Ledger’s interface: CHEN RAN. An analyst from the Central District had just carried out a financial speculation there. And because of the rich people’s number games, the domino effect immediately hit the Lower District in a matter of seconds! The data lines in front of me were moving like a frenzied electric current: [X-5 GENERATOR SPARE PARTS STOCK AT THE ‘SCRAP-NET’ WORKSHOP: BOUGHT IN BULK BY AN ANONYMOUS ENTITY (ZHAO JING)] [CURRENT MARKET PRICE: 120 JIANG-CREDITS / UNIT] “Oh my God…” I whispered, clenching my fingers until they turned white. The X-5 spare part I’d bought from Old Man Wong for 5 Credits and sold to the repair shop for 35 Credits... now the price has skyrocketed to 120 Credits! If I’d just held onto it a little longer, I could have paid off all of Dad’s medical bills tonight! A deep sense of regret burned in my chest. I felt so stupid and naive. I thought I was clever at exploiting market inefficiencies, but it turned out I was just picking up the crumbs discarded by the upper and middle classes. They flip numbers in a matter of seconds, while I’m risking my life for just a few dozen Credits. [USER LIN XIA, DON’T PANIC,] The Ledger’s mechanical voice whispered inside my head, so cold and rational. [THE GAME HAS JUST BEGUN. CHEN RAN AND ZHAO JING’S MOVES HAVE CREATED A ‘BUTTERFLY EFFECT’ IN THE BLACK MARKET. A NEW ARBITRAGE OPPORTUNITY HAS OPENED WITH A 1,200% MARGIN.] “What other opportunities?” I whispered hoarsely in the quiet corner of the clinic. [THE ‘SCRAP-NET’ WORKSHOP NOW HOLDS A MONOPOLY ON THE LOWER DISTRICT’S GENERATORS. HOWEVER, THE WORKSHOP OWNER IS UNAWARE THAT DUMPING SHIPMENTS FROM JINGHUA CORP WILL ARRIVE AT THE RIGHT HARBOR IN 3 HOURS. IF YOU BUY THE ‘HEAVY CONTRACT’ OPTION NOW BEFORE THE DUMPING ARRIVES...] I stared at The Ledger’s screen, which displayed an interactive 3D graph. There, I saw three glowing dots connected by thin data lines: ° The green dot at the bottom (me). ° The cyan dot in the middle (Chen Ran). ° The emerald dot at the top (Zhao Jing). The three of us were on different class floors, had never met, and had never seen each other face-to-face. But through The Ledger, the decisions made by Chen Ran at his desk and Zhao Jing’s sabotage plans in his towering skyscraper reverberated directly into the palm of my hand here in this seedy alley. This isn’t just a price-leaking tool. It’s a giant chessboard. “Those at the top play with numbers,” I said softly, wiping the cold tears from my cheeks with the sleeve of my wet cargo jacket. “But they need people on the ground to physically move the goods.” My phone vibrated again. A notification from the ‘State’ app popped up with a red number that grew increasingly threatening: [LATEST EFFICIENCY SCORE: 32/100 (CRITICAL)] [LIQUIDATION THRESHOLD SET: 30 HOURS REMAINING] I didn’t have much time. I had to take advantage of the market chaos created by Chen Ran and Zhao Jing to climb my way out of this abyss. If those rich people want to set the market ablaze for their own gain, I’ll make sure I’m the one who takes the embers to survive. I turned around, left the clinic, and stepped back into the acid rain, my eyes now filled not with fear, but with ambition.
