“ You're losing control”, the words landed like a punch but Peter Hart didn't flinch as he sat at the head of the twenty-four-seat conference table with an unreadable expression.
Shareholders, board members, executives, all of them suddenly had an opinion. As the numbers, graphs, predictions and quarterly reports glowed on the massive screen behind him, the room erupted around him representing something far more dangerous: Vulnerability. “The stock dropped 4% in less than 2 weeks” one shareholder snapped, then another and another.
Peter folded his hands, suddenly the room went silent not because they respected him but because they feared him. He said calmly “4% after three consecutive years of record growth”.
Nobody answered as his gaze swept across the room, some avoided eye contact while others stared back fiercely.
They were getting bolder which only happened when someone was encouraging them. Someone powerful, someone inside - the realization struck almost immediately; His uncle Victor Hart, working behind the scenes for months patiently and slowly turning allies into enemies, uncertainty into opportunity. A dangerous strategy that was definitely working.
The conference room’s door opened as someone walked in. Peter didn't bother looking up. It's only one person that enters a meeting late without consequences, Victor Hart with a dangerously perfect smile, silver hair tailored suit image of a respected businessman but Peter knew better, a mask has stopped believing years ago. Victor took his seats “Apologies” he said smoothly the lie sounded so effortless as Peter ached in his heart.
The meeting continued as questions became accusations, concerns became criticisms and every conversation somehow circled back to Peter. His leadership, His future, His decisions.
There was the real attack, as a board member cleared his throat “There are concerns regarding succession stability”. Peter clenched his feast beneath the table like he knew all the questions and accusations will lead to this, the issue everyone had been dancing around.
Victor Lynn back in his chair watching, waiting, enjoying every second. Peter asked, “ What concerns ?”. The man hesitated then said “the company lacks a clear family image”.
Peter nearly laughed knowing fully well what he meant that “he wasn't married”, a meaningless phrase hiding a very specific complaint.
The room fell silent as several executives bowed their heads and others shifted uncomfortably.
Victor smiled “I believe what Mr Keller is trying to say is that investors often prefer stability”. Peter loops directly at him, their eyes locked as Victor continues “a wife, a family, continuity”. There it was, finally the truth.
Peter's life had become another weapon, another weakness, another excuse to question his authority.
The meeting ended an hour later, Peter left before anyone could stop him.

Finally, his reflection stared back from the polished steel walls as the elevator reached the top floor. His private office overlooked Luxembourg's skyline, a view that usually calmed him but today it didn't. He loosened his style and walked towards the window and looked down as thousands of people were willing to do anything for power.
His phone buzzed, one message from his mother - “Come home tonight”. No explanations, no request, just a command.
Peter sighed - that means Eleanor hearts had already heard about the board meeting.
Hart Manor stood on the outskirts of the city, elegant and historic. The family had lived there for generations.b Peter parked his car and entered through the main doors. The house felt unusually quiet, there Eleanor sat beside the fireplace quietly with a glass of wine. She didn't stand up immediately which meant she was annoyed. Spita broke the silence - “ You heard”. Eleanor replied “ No, I simply enjoy inviting my son to dinner so we can discuss the weather”. “Mother….”.
“ They are coming after you Victor is questioning your leadership because he's concerned about the company”, Eleanor replied almost immediately. Peter frowned she continued - “Victor wants the company” standing, “he always had, for years he believed he could out maneuver your father, he failed and he's trying again”.
Peter remained silent then laughed humorlessly “so this is about marriage?”. His mother's gaze met him then she said “it's about the perception, Victor has convinced people that you are vulnerable”.
Peter snapped - “because I'm single?”. Eleanor moved closer “because he needs a weakness, you need to get ahead of this”. Peter stared at her like he knew the next thing she would say which came out right - “You need to get married”. He smiled and laughed but the amusement vanished quickly when his mother didn't. He said - “ You can't be serious, To who?”. Eleanor shrugged “someone suitable”.
Peter shook his head - “No”.
Eleanor worked up to him and asked “is this still about Megan?”
Peter replied almost immediately “that chapter is closed”. “ Really? “ - Eleanor snapped.
Just as he was about to reply a servant stepped inside - “ Mr Hart”. Peter turned “what is it?”. The seventh hesitated then spoke “Your uncle Victor is here.”
Peter's jaw tightened as he looked at the clock, 11:00 p.m. with thoughts flooding his mind but once stood out “Why is Victor here because he never visited without a reason or a plan”.
Victor walked in acting all family like someone who came in with good news but Peter knew he was up to something. He greeted Eleanor with open arms while Peter stood watching him closely.
Peter snapped - “ Why are you here at this hour?”. Victor smiled and replied “am I not welcome here anymore?”. Peter clenched his fist.
Victor walked up to him or smiley and said "I just came to see your mother I didn't know you were around”. He continued “ what happened at the meeting today, it was just fear among the shareholders and investors and they hoped you’d do better”.
Peter fakely smiled like he knew where he was going with this.
Victor sat and was offered a wine by the servant, he proceeded to ask Peter if he had thought about getting married at all.
Peter stared at him fiercely, as if he came here to mock him and continue from where he stopped at work…
Peter was getting tired of all these and snapped immediately “where are you getting to with all of these?”.
His uncle stood up and walked up closely to Peter whispering in his ears - “ Your days are numbered”. He left the house.
