Chapter Two: Into the Darkness

778 Words
The steady beep of a heart monitor echoed through the sterile hospital room. Three days. That was how long Romeo Falcone had been suspended between life and death. The city’s most feared mafia heir lay motionless beneath crisp white sheets, tubes and wires attached to a body that had once seemed untouchable. Outside his room, armed guards stood watch. Inside, silence ruled. Until A soft laugh drifted through the darkness. Romeo frowned. Darkness? He opened his eyes. Only to find himself standing barefoot on a beach. Waves lapped against the shore. The sky stretched endlessly above him, painted in shades of orange and pink. Confused, he glanced around. Where am I? Then he saw her. The girl from the rooftop. She stood at the water’s edge, her long dark hair dancing in the sea breeze. The same girl he’d seen moments before his father’s blood stained his hands. Cassia. Though he didn’t know her name yet. She turned toward him, smiling faintly. “You’re late.” Romeo’s brows furrowed. “Do I know you?” She shrugged playfully. “Should you?” He took a cautious step forward. “I’ve never seen you before.” A shadow crossed her face. “Then why do you look at me like you’ve lost something?” Before Romeo could answer, a sharp pain tore through his chest. He gasped. His knees buckled. The beach blurred. The girl’s expression shifted into concern. “You should wake up,” she whispered. The world shattered. Romeo’s body jerked violently against the hospital bed. Machines began screaming. Doctors rushed into the room. “He’s crashing!” “Get the crash cart!” “Clear!” The shock of electricity surged through him. Nothing. Again. “Clear!” Outside, Dante Russo, Romeo’s right-hand man, clenched his fists. “Come on, boss,” he muttered. “Don’t you dare leave us too.” Another shock. Silence. Then Beep. Beep. Beep. The monitor stabilized. A collective breath swept through the room. The doctors exchanged relieved glances. “He’s still with us.” The dreams continued. Day after day. Week after week. The same beach. The same girl. Sometimes she sat beneath a striped umbrella reading. Sometimes she danced barefoot through the waves. Sometimes she simply stared at him. Waiting. Watching. Alive. And each time he tried asking who she was… He woke before receiving an answer. Eight months later. Dante sat beside Romeo’s bedside. “You know,” he muttered, exhaustion evident in his voice, “your father would’ve hated this.” Silence. “He would’ve called you dramatic.” Nothing. Dante sighed. “The family needs you.” Still nothing. “The people who killed your father are still out there.” No response. Then— Romeo’s fingers twitched. Dante froze. Slowly… Romeo’s lips parted. Barely audible. “…her.” Dante stood abruptly. “What?” Romeo’s brows knitted together. His eyes remained closed. “…find her.” Dante stared at him. “Boss?” Romeo whispered again. The words hoarse. Desperate. “The girl…” Then silence reclaimed him. But Dante had heard enough. For the first time in months… Romeo Falcone had asked for something. Back within the endless dreamscape, Romeo stood beside the ocean. Cassia gazed toward the horizon. “The sea is beautiful,” she murmured. He stepped closer. “Who are you?” This time, she looked directly at him. Sadness flickered in her eyes. “I’m the reason you’re still fighting.” His throat tightened. “I don’t understand.” “You don’t have to.” A wave crashed against the shore. “Not yet.” The wind shifted. Cassia stepped backward. Romeo reached for her. “Wait.” She smiled softly. “You’ll find me.” The beach dissolved beneath his feet. Darkness surged forward once more. Then— Romeo Falcone opened his eyes. For the first time in a year. The bright hospital lights burned against his vision. Doctors rushed into the room. Nurses shouted. Dante stood frozen near the doorway. Tears threatened to spill down his face. “Boss?” Romeo ignored everyone. His voice cracked as he spoke. “The girl.” Dante moved closer. “What girl?” Romeo’s gaze hardened despite the weakness in his body. “Find her.” He swallowed painfully. “The girl from the beach.” The room fell silent. Because Dante knew Romeo Falcone well enough to recognize that look in his eyes. Determination. Obsession. The kind that changed destinies. And somewhere out there… Completely unaware… Cassia Monroe was living her life. Not knowing she had become the reason one of the world’s most dangerous men had chosen to survive.
