The fire crackled softly.
No one spoke.
Elena felt as though the room had begun to spin.
"The... last Queen of the Witches?" she repeated.
The elderly woman nodded.
"My name is Seraphina Thorn. I served your grandmother many years ago."
"You knew her?"
"I was one of her closest friends."
Elena's hands trembled.
"I've spent my whole life believing I had no family."
"You have one," Seraphina replied gently. "You simply never knew them."
She motioned for everyone to sit.
"There were once seven great witch clans that protected the balance between humans and the supernatural. Your grandmother, Queen Evelyn Hart, united them. She was the most powerful witch of her generation."
"What happened to her?"
Seraphina's eyes filled with sorrow.
"She was betrayed."
"By who?"
Before Seraphina could answer, Kael spoke.
"Damien."
She nodded.
"He wanted the seal protecting the First Vampire destroyed. Your grandmother refused."
"So he killed her?"
"No."
Seraphina looked into the flames.
"Someone even more dangerous did."
The room grew silent.
"There was another vampire," she continued. "Older than Damien. Stronger than Lucien."
Elena frowned.
"I thought the First Vampire was sealed away."
"He is."
"So who was this?"
Seraphina's expression darkened.
"He was known as Malachi."
"The First Vampire's first son."
A chill swept through the room.
"Malachi believed his father should rule the world. He slaughtered entire villages searching for the seal."
"And my grandmother stopped him?"
"She wounded him... but couldn't destroy him."
"What happened then?"
"He vanished."
Kael folded his arms.
"No one has seen him in over twenty years."
Seraphina's voice became barely a whisper.
"Which means he's waiting."
Elena felt her heartbeat quicken.
"For what?"
"For you."
Just then, she remembered the journal.
"My mother's journal..."
She hurriedly pulled it from her backpack and opened it to the page she had been interrupted from reading.
Her mother's elegant handwriting continued:
Your father wasn't an ordinary man.
He wasn't a vampire.
He wasn't a witch.
He was the Alpha of the Moonborn Pack...
Elena's eyes widened.
She looked up at Kael.
"...My father was... a werewolf?"
Kael stared at her in complete disbelief.
Seraphina slowly closed her eyes.
"The secret is finally out."
A heavy silence filled the cabin.
Elena's entire life had been built on lies.
She wasn't simply human.
She carried the blood of witches...
...and werewolves.
Outside, thunder rolled across the mountains.
Far away, hidden in the ruins beneath Raven Hollow...
A pair of ancient crimson eyes slowly opened in the darkness.
A deep voice echoed through the forgotten chamber.
"The heir has awakened..."
And somewhere else, chained beneath the headquarters of the Crimson Cross, Lucien slowly lifted his head.
He smiled despite the blood running down his face.
Because he knew one thing.
Elena was no longer running.
She was becoming exactly who she was destined to be.
