C11: Wrong Mate
Raine fell to the ground with great force. She tried to stand up, but her left ankle was twisted.
Raphael, whose wolf had taken over in rage, could barely control his body as he moved forward, not bothering to look back.
She managed to stand up, her eyes filled with confusion and pain as she dragged her leg, calling out to Raphael despite the sharp pain she felt with each step.
She stopped behind him, her eyes widening as tears filled them. She saw Raphael embracing her sister, his nose buried in her neck.
“Mate, mine,” she heard Raphael’s hoarse voice, filled with joy and fulfillment.
Her shoulders slumped as she watched them.
Alice peeked at her from Raphael’s shoulder and grinned victoriously.
After a while, Raine parted her lips, ignoring the pain in her chest that made it hard to breathe.
“Raphael,” she called softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Raphael turned sharply in anger, ready to react to the disturbance. His gray eyes fixed on her as he slowly recognized her.
His gaze dropped to her dusty dress.
He realized she was the one he had pushed away, and the one in his arms was Alice?.
He looked at Alice, his brows knitting in confusion and anger.
Stepping away from her, he asked coldly, “What are you doing here?”
“I... I felt the mate bond. My wolf could not resist the pull. It dragged me outside, and I met you,” Alice explained, her cheeks turning red with embarrassment.
Raphael clenched his fist, breaking the small box he had been holding. The snapping sound echoed in the silence, drawing their attention.
Raine looked away as she wiped her tears. Nothing ever seemed to go her way, from her earliest memories to Alice’s presence in her life, and now this.
The more she wiped her tears, the more they fell. She wanted to scream and cry out loud, but she had long learned to cry silently.
Alpha Elmore came outside with his Luna. They had followed Alice in worry after she left the banquet in a hurry.
Their gaze settled on them.
“What is going on here?” he asked, frowning.
“Father... I have found my mate,” Alice said carefully, glancing nervously at Raphael. She wanted to celebrate, but his cold presence held her back.
Luna Indira pulled her daughter gently to the side after glaring at Raine.
“Who are you talking about, dear?” she asked curiously.
“Raphael. I do not know how it happened. I felt the pull and came outside, only to find that he is my mate,” she said quickly, still feeling Raphael’s cold gaze on her.
“We need to talk inside,” Alpha Elmore said, studying them briefly before turning and walking back in.
Some of the guests had also come outside, noticing that the Alpha and his Luna had left abruptly after their daughter.
They stood at a distance, whispering among themselves as they tried to understand what was happening.
Luna Indira held Alice gently, reassuring her as they walked away, ignoring Raine completely, even though her leg was injured.
Beta Mascot, who had been instructed by the Alpha to manage the guests, led them back inside. He redirected their attention to the feast, offering excuses about an urgent private matter.
Outside the mansion, Raphael and Raine were left alone.
“Raine, I am sorry. I did not mean to push you away. I did not mean for any of this to happen,” Raphael said softly as he reached for her hand.
Raine did not speak. Her eyes remained lowered.
Raphael lifted her chin, forcing her to look at him. His gray eyes were filled with regret.
“Talk to me. Shout at me if you want, but do not shut me out,” he said, his voice tense as tears rolled down her face.
Raine remained silent. After a while, she nodded slightly, wincing as she tried to move her injured leg.
Raphael’s expression tightened at the sight. He bent down and carried her in his arms, taking her to the study room.
He placed her gently on a seat and sat beside her, while Alice and Luna Indira sat across from them.
“Raphael, what are your plans?” Alpha Elmore asked, his gaze fixed on him.
The room fell silent.
“I love Raine. I will not let her go,” he said firmly, squeezing her hand.
Alice lowered her head as tears fell. As the most admired she-wolf, she had never been rejected before.
“What about me? You know what happens when a werewolf is rejected,” she said, her voice shaking.
“Raphael, think carefully. Alice is only nineteen. She is too young to go through rejection. Even older wolves cannot handle it,” Luna Indira said.
“You know the pain it brings. It can even kill her, just like what happened to your father.”
Raphael clenched his fists tightly. The memory of his father’s death flashed in his mind.
His father had been rejected by his mate after Raphael was born. The pain weakened him until he died when Raphael was twelve.
Raphael closed his eyes briefly, then opened them with determination.
“Alpha, I will not change my mind. Alice will find someone else. It will not be me,” he said firmly.
“You cannot reject me. I do not mind if you do not love me, just do not abandon me,” Alice cried, holding her mother’s hand.
“I will take my leave now, Alpha. I hope you accept my decision,” Raphael said as he stood up, he scooped Raine up and carried her with him.
He took her to her room and laid her down.
He took some ointment from the cupboard and applied it to her injured leg.
“Will you be alright, even though she is your mate?” Raine asked softly, she knew the risks.
Raphael looked up at her.
“All I want is you,” he said simply, returning to what he was doing.
Raine felt reassured, but deep down, she was still worried. The mate bond was strong, strong enough to drive him mad.
After Raphael helped her fall asleep, he left, not wanting to stay in the house any longer and risk losing control.
When Raine opened her eyes, her surroundings had changed.
She was in a beautiful garden filled with wild roses and other flowers, the same garden she had always dreamed of. This time, the figure was not there, and the place was not as dense.
“Stay,” she heard the voice again, but it was not as painful as before.
She woke up immediately, her hands flying to her face, only to find a soft petal resting in her palm.
