The guards were closing in.
I felt Nathaniel's hand tighten on mine. Damian's body was a wall in front of me. Caleb and Marcus flanked us, their presence a shield against the cold. The air was thick with tension, the sound of boots on stone echoing in the vast chamber.
Aldric's smile was cold and triumphant. "You have nowhere to go," he said. "You have no claim. No power. No allies." He gestured to the guards. "Take them."
Damian moved.
He did not attack. He did not draw a weapon. He simply stepped forward, his voice low and commanding. "You will not touch her."
The guards hesitated. They knew who he was. They knew what he was capable of.
Aldric's smile faltered. "You are a traitor to the kingdom. You are all traitors. Step aside, or you will be arrested with her."
Damian did not move. "Then arrest me."
I felt my heart stop. "Damian, no."
He looked back at me. His eyes were fierce. "I told you. I would die for you." His voice cracked on the last word. "I meant it."
I felt the tears come. They burned in my eyes, hot and sudden. I had not meant to cry. But I could not stop them. "I do not want you to die for me. I want you to live for me."
He did not smile, but something softened in his eyes. "Then let us live. Together."
I looked at Nathaniel. His hand was still in mine. I looked at Caleb and Marcus. They were ready to fight. They were ready to die.
I was done running.
"Fine," I said. "Take me. But let them go."
Aldric's smile returned. "Oh, I do not think so. They are all traitors. They will all face the consequences."
Damian stepped forward. His voice was low and cold. "Then you will have to kill all of us."
The guards hesitated again. They were outnumbered. They were outmatched.
Aldric's smile faded. He was calculating. He was dangerous.
I could see the calculation behind his eyes. He was weighing his options. He could try to take us all. But it would be a fight. And he was not ready to fight.
"Fine," he said. "Take the girl. Let the Alphas go. For now."
The guards moved toward me. Damian stepped in front of me again, his body a wall. I felt their hands on my arms. Cold. Rough.
"No," I said. "Damian, let them take me." The words tasted like ash in my mouth. I did not want to go. But I would not let them die for me.
He looked at me. His eyes were desperate. "Raven"
"Let them take me," I said. "I will find a way out. I always do."
He did not want to let go. I could see it in his eyes. But he did. He stepped aside.
The guards took my arms. Their grips were rough. I did not struggle.
I looked at Damian. His eyes were wet. Tears ran down his cheeks, silent and unashamed. I had never seen him cry before. He was always so controlled, so fierce. But now he was breaking in front of me. He was showing me the part of himself he had never shown anyone. And I realized he trusted me. He trusted me with his vulnerability. And that meant more than any promise he had ever made.
"I will come back," I said. "I will always come back."
He nodded. He could not speak.
I looked at Nathaniel. His hand was still reaching for mine. I looked at Caleb. His face was pale. I looked at Marcus. His eyes were dark.
They were all broken. They were all afraid.
But they were all still there.
The dungeon was cold and dark.
The guards had thrown me into a cell and left me here. The stone walls were damp. The air smelled of mold and rust. I sat in the corner, my knees drawn up to my chest, and I tried to think.
I had been captured before. I had been imprisoned before. But this was different. This time, I was not just a servant. I was the queen. And I had people who would fight for me.
I pressed my hand to my neck. The mark was still there. The Royal Bite. It was a gift. A blessing. A sign that the Moon Goddess had chosen me.
And I would not let Aldric take that away from me.
I heard footsteps in the corridor. I looked up.
Damian was standing outside my cell. His face was pale, his eyes wild. He was covered in dust and sweat.
"Damian?" I stood. "How did you get in here?"
"The guards are not as loyal as Aldric thinks," he said. "I bribed them. I" He stopped. "I could not leave you here. I could not."
I pressed my hand to the bars. "Damian, you should not have come. Aldric will kill you if he finds you."
"I do not care." He pressed his hand to the bars, his fingers reaching for mine. "I told you. I would die for you. I meant it."
I felt the tears come again. "I know. I know you did."
"I am not leaving without you," he said.
I shook my head. "You cannot break me out. The guards are everywhere. Aldric is watching. I need to stay here. I need to wait."
"Wait for what?"
"For the right moment." I looked at him. His eyes were fierce. "I have been invisible my whole life. I have been waiting for the right moment my whole life. And now, now I have people who will fight for me. I have you. I have Nathaniel. I have Caleb and Marcus. I am not going to waste that."
He was silent for a long moment. Then he said, "I do not know how to let you go."
"Then do not let me go." I pressed my hand harder against the bars. "Stay with me. Just for a little while."
He nodded. He slid down the wall and sat on the cold stone floor. I sat on the other side of the bars, our hands still touching through the gaps.
We sat there in silence. The darkness was thick and heavy. But his hand was warm on mine.
"I will get you out," he said. "I will find a way. I will not let him win."
I believed him. For the first time, I truly believed him.
I do not know how long we sat there. The silence stretched, but his hand was warm on mine. His presence was steady. I closed my eyes and let myself hope.
Eventually, I heard footsteps. More than one pair. I looked up.
Nathaniel was standing at the end of the corridor. Caleb and Marcus were behind him. They were covered in dust and sweat, their faces pale but determined. I could feel them through the bond, their devotion, their fear, their hope. They had come for me. All of them.
"Damian," Nathaniel said. "We are not leaving without her."
Damian stood. "I know."
Marcus stepped forward. His voice was quiet. "We have a plan. We need you to trust us."
I looked at all four of them. They were standing in the dim light of the dungeon, their faces tired but fierce.
I did not know if I could trust them. I did not know if I could forgive them.
But I knew I did not want to face this alone.
"Tell me," I said. "Tell me your plan."
The message arrived at dawn.
Aldric had issued a decree. Anyone who harbored the pretender queen would be executed.
He was coming for us.
And he was not going to stop.
