THE FIRST CRACK

Raven’s POV The bond was screaming. I pressed my palms to my temples, trying to push it out, but it was useless. I could feel him Damian his fury a white-hot blade slicing through the quiet of my room. It wasn't just anger. It was something worse. Something that felt like betrayal. I hadn't done anything. I had just sat with Marcus. I had just let him stay. And now Damian was drowning in a jealousy so raw it made my stomach turn. I could feel it pressing against my ribs, hot and heavy, like I was breathing smoke. Through the bond, I felt the confrontation begin. "You went to her." Damian's voice not words, but emotion. Accusation. Rage. "You went to her without telling me." Marcus's response was quiet, steady. Not defensive. Just... present. "She needed someone. You weren't there." "She didn't want you there." "She didn't tell me to leave." The silence that followed was worse than the shouting. I couldn't breathe. I pressed my hand to my chest, feeling my heart pound against my ribs. I could feel all of them Caleb's desperation like a dull ache in my bones, Nathaniel's suffocating hope like a hand around my throat, Marcus's fragile resolve like a thread about to snap. And Damian. Damian was consuming everything, his jealousy bleeding through the bond like poison. I should have gotten up. I should have gone to them. But my legs wouldn't move. So I stayed. And I listened. The confrontation spilled into the corridor, and I could feel it through the bond. Damian's rage, Marcus's quiet defiance, Caleb's desperate interference, Nathaniel's silent anguish. "You think this changes anything?" Damian's voice was sharp, cutting. "You think she'll choose you just because you sat with her?" "I think she'll choose whoever she wants," Marcus said. "And I think you're terrified it won't be you." A pause. Then a low, dangerous laugh. "I'm not the one who's terrified," Damian said. "You can't even tell her the truth. You sit there with your secrets, pretending to be better than us. But you're worse. You're the worst of all." The bond pulsed with Marcus's shame, hot and acidic. It crashed over me like a wave, and I gasped. I could see him in my mind, his hands shaking, his jaw tight, the way he looked at the floor like it held the answers he couldn't find. He was hiding something. Something bigger than just watching me. Something that made him afraid of his own shadow. And Damian knew. I should have hated him more. I should have hated all of them. But I couldn't stop thinking about Marcus's face when he had said: "You reminded me of me." I had never seen him look so vulnerable. The door burst open, and I flinched so hard I nearly fell off my cot. Elara stood in the doorway, her face pale, her eyes wide. "Raven, there's a problem." "What is it?" My voice was raw, cracked. "Lord Aldric is calling a meeting. The Council has been summoned. He's going to challenge you." I felt the ground shift beneath me. My stomach dropped. My hands went cold. I opened my mouth to speak, but nothing came out. The words were stuck in my throat, lodged there like stones. I had known it was coming. I had known Aldric was dangerous. But I had been so caught up in the Alphas, in Marcus, in the chaos of the bond, that I had almost forgotten. Aldric was coming for my throne. And I wasn't ready. "What does he want?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. I hated how small I sounded, and hated that I needed to ask. Elara shook her head. "I don't know. But he's been making moves for days. He's been meeting with the Council members, whispering in their ears. He's going to argue that you're not fit to be queen." My hands were shaking. I pressed them to my sides, trying to hold myself still. "Because I'm an Omega." "Because you're an Omega. Because you're lowborn. Because..." Elara hesitated. "Because what?" "Because he's claiming the mark is fake. He's saying you're a pretender. That you faked the Royal Bite." I laughed. It was a broken, hollow sound. "Faked it? I was bleeding. I" I touched my neck, feeling the raised skin of the mark. "He can't fake this." "He's not going to argue it with you. He's going to argue it with the Council. And they're scared of him. They're scared of what he'll do if they don't listen." I closed my eyes. I could feel the bond still pulsing, the weight of all four Alphas pressing down on me. Marcus's shame. Damian's rage. Caleb's desperation. Nathaniel's hope. I was drowning in them. "What do I do?" I asked. My voice was barely a whisper. I hated how small I sounded. Elara met my eyes. "You fight. You don't back down. You make them see that you're not what Aldric says you are." "And what am I?" Elara reached out and took my hand. Her grip was warm and steady. "You're the queen. The Moon Goddess chose you. Not Aldric. Not the Council. You. Don't let him take that from you." I felt something flicker in my chest. Something small and fragile. Hope. "I can't go out there," I said. "I can't face them." Elara squeezed my hand. "You don't have to face them alone. You have the Alphas. Whether you like it or not, they'll fight for you." I wanted to argue. I wanted to say that I didn't want their help, that I didn't need them, that I'd rather burn than accept anything from them. But I thought of Marcus sitting in silence with me. Thought of the way Damian had wept in front of me. Thought of Caleb's desperate hope, Nathaniel's suffocating love. I didn't want them to fight for me. I didn't want to need them. But I did. The word felt like glass in my throat. Need. I had spent years learning not to need anyone. Years learning that dependence was weakness, that wanting meant being hurt. And now, now I needed them. All of them. The men who had broken me. The men who were trying to put me back together. I hated it. I hated every part of it. But I couldn't deny it anymore. I didn't want to need them. But I did. And tomorrow, tomorrow I would have to face the Council. And I would have to decide who I was willing to fight with.
