The Moment Everything Changed

1039 Words
The heat radiating from Prachi’s eyes was fiercer than the scorching afternoon sun beating down outside the shop. Her footsteps fell heavy and deliberate against the pavement. The moment she stopped right in front of Rishi, her voice cracked like a whip—sharp with sarcasm, yet overflowing with love and complaint. "Didn't I tell you to meet me by the river at exactly two o'clock? Why didn't you show up?" Prachi was breathing heavily, her chest heaving with exertion. "Do you have any idea how long I waited for you? I stood there roasting in the blazing sun!" The tools in Rishi’s hands nearly slipped from his grasp. When he finally dared to look up, he saw the raw anger and deep disappointment etched on her face. His heart began to hammer violently against his ribs. He needed to explain himself, but somehow, whenever he stood before this girl, his words always seemed to catch in his throat. After a long, agonizing silence, avoiding her burning gaze, he finally mustered the courage to speak. His voice was timid, barely above a whisper. "I... I'm sorry, Prachi. There was just too much work. The boss told me I had to stay." Prachi’s anger softened slightly, but the bitter edge in her voice remained. "Yes, you're working, I know that. But can't you carve out even a sliver of time for me in your day? I'm studying medicine, burying my head in textbooks day and night, yet I still manage to make time for you, don't I? Because you matter to me!" Rishi felt completely helpless. He had no answer to that. He knew Prachi was right, but how could he possibly put his miserable circumstances into words? Standing a short distance away, their friend Deva was watching the entire exchange unfold. He was smiling to himself. He knew Prachi’s fury was just her way of showing how much she cared, but he wisely decided not to intervene, choosing instead to quietly enjoy the show. Just then, Prachi adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and spoke with the commanding tone of a general. "Come on. You're coming with me right now." Rishi hesitated, shifting his weight uncomfortably. "I... I have to ask my boss." Prachi stomped her foot in frustration. "Then why are you standing here like a statue? Go ask him!" Trembling slightly, Rishi approached his boss. In a low, shaky voice, he asked, "Sir... could I please take a short break? I have something really important I need to take care of." The boss looked up from his ledger, his face instantly twisting into a scowl. He barked, "We are drowning in work right now, and you're thinking about taking a stroll? How can you just leave in the middle of the day? Whatever this important thing is, do it in the evening! Get back to work!" But Rishi wasn't one to give up easily—especially not when it came to Prachi. He pleaded repeatedly. There was a strange mix of desperation and unwavering loyalty in his eyes. Finally, the boss's rigid heart softened just a fraction, and grumbling under his breath, he granted him permission to leave. The Riverbank and Fleeting Peace Far from the suffocating air of the shop, Rishi and Prachi reached the riverbank. The gentle sound of the lapping water and the cool breeze washing over them finally quelled the last remnants of Prachi’s anger. They sat down together beneath the shade of an old, sprawling tree. After a few moments, Rishi stood up and plucked some raw mangoes from the branches above. He pulled a small pocket knife from his trousers and carefully sliced the fruit. Then, retrieving a washed, clean handkerchief from his pocket, he spread it out like a tiny picnic blanket and arranged the mango slices on it, placing it gently in front of Prachi. This small, yet profoundly tender gesture worked like magic on Prachi’s heart. Suddenly, tears of pure joy and overwhelming emotion welled up in her eyes. She realized in that moment that while Rishi might never be able to afford expensive gifts, the purity of his care for her was priceless. She leaned forward, wrapping her arms tightly around Rishi, burying her face in his shoulder. She whispered softly against his skin, "I know, Rishi. I know how deeply you love me. And I promise you today... no matter what happens, I will never leave you. Never." Rishi’s heart swelled with an indescribable joy. In that fleeting moment, he felt as if he held all the wealth in the world right there in his arms. Looking up at the endless sky, he thought to himself, My pockets might be empty, but I have a soulmate like Prachi. To me, that is the greatest fortune of all. Two Years Later... Time slipped through their fingers like dry sand. Two years had passed. Prachi had moved to a much larger city to pursue her advanced medical degree. Now, their meetings were rare. Miles of distance separated them, but the late-night phone calls that stretched until dawn kept their memories and their love fiercely alive. Rishi worked himself to the bone, day and night, driven by a single purpose: to one day become a man worthy of Prachi. But then came the day that changed absolutely everything. Rishi was knee-deep in work at the shop when his phone suddenly buzzed. The name 'Prachi' flashed brightly across the screen. A warm smile instantly spread across his face as he swiped to answer. But before he could even get the word "Hello" out, the sound of Prachi sobbing hysterically echoed through the receiver. Rishi’s smile vanished instantly. His heart slammed into overdrive. "Prachi! What happened? Why are you crying? Are you okay?" Hearing that sweet voice completely shattered on the other end of the line sent a violent tremor through Rishi’s entire body. Deep down, a terrifying realization began to claw at his gut—something horrific was about to happen. Something that was going to destroy his entire world.
