Nyra ran straight into him.
Not by choice, by force.
The moment she turned, the world seemed to tilt, pressure crashing down on her from all sides. Instinct took over. She pivoted to flee and slammed hard into Kade’s chest.
Solid.
Unmoving.
Like hitting a wall that breathed.
His hand came up instantly, gripping her arm to steady her before she could fall back. The contact sent a violent jolt through her system; heat, sharp and electric, ripping through her chest like something waking up.
Nyra gasped.
“Don’t touch me” she started, trying to yank free.
Kade didn’t let go.
Not tighter.
Just enough.
Enough to hold her in place.
“Too late,” he said quietly.
Behind them, the forest went still.
Not empty.
Waiting.
Nyra forced herself to breathe through the strange pull clawing through her chest. “What the hell is happening to me?”
Kade’s gaze dropped briefly to where his hand held her arm.
Then back to her face.
“It’s happening to both of us.”
That didn’t make it better.
It made it worse.
Nyra shook her head, panic rising sharper now. “No, no, I don’t, whatever this is, I don’t want it.”
Something flickered in his eyes at that.
Not anger.
Something tighter.
Controlled.
“You don’t get to choose it,” he said.
Nyra let out a harsh laugh despite everything. “Watch me.”
She twisted again, trying to pull away
The moment she did, pain spiked through her chest.
Sharp.
Immediate.
Like something tearing.
Nyra choked on her breath, stumbling forward slightly.
Kade caught her before she hit the ground.
This time
Closer.
Too close.
Her back pressed against him, his arm braced around her to keep her upright.
And the second their bodies aligned
Everything snapped.
Nyra froze.
Her breath stilled.
The world around them blurred out completely.
All she could feel
Was him.
Heat.
Pressure.
Something deeper.
Something ancient.
Something inside her responding in a way she didn’t understand and didn’t want to.
“No…” she whispered.
Kade’s voice came low, right near her ear.
“Feel it.”
Nyra squeezed her eyes shut. “I said no.”
But her body betrayed her again.
Her pulse synced with his.
Her breathing staggered into the same rhythm.
And for a split second
Something flashed in her mind.
Not memory.
Not fully.
But close.
A flash of silver light.
A full moon, too large, too bright.
And a voice she didn’t recognize whispering something she couldn’t hear.
Nyra jerked forward violently, breaking the contact.
The moment she did, the connection snapped back, but didn’t disappear.
It lingered.
Under her skin.
Alive.
She staggered back a step, breathing hard. “Stay away from me.”
Kade didn’t move.
But something in his stance had changed.
Less controlled.
More aware.
Like he was feeling the same thing and not ignoring it anymore.
Behind them, the presence in the forest shifted again.
The one that had spoken earlier stepped forward.
Closer now.
Clearer.
Nyra saw him properly this time.
He looked human.
Too human.
But his eyes
They weren’t right.
Too still.
Too knowing.
“You see it now,” he said softly.
Nyra’s stomach twisted. “See what?”
His gaze flicked between her and Kade.
Then back to her.
“The bond.”
Silence crashed between them.
Nyra’s chest tightened.
“No,” she said immediately. “No, that’s not”
“It is,” Kade cut in, voice calm but firm.
Nyra turned sharply to him. “Don’t you dare agree with him!”
Kade didn’t flinch.
Didn’t argue.
Didn’t soften it.
“It’s real,” he said.
The words hit harder than anything else tonight.
Because he believed it.
Completely.
Nyra shook her head again, backing up. “No. I don’t belong to anyone. I don’t, this doesn’t happen to me.”
The man in front of them smiled slightly.
“That’s where you’re wrong.”
Nyra’s skin crawled.
Kade shifted slightly in front of her.
Protective.
But not gentle.
Calculated.
Like he was placing himself between her and something dangerous, not just physically, but strategically.
“Leave,” Kade said again.
The man tilted his head.
“Or what?” he asked softly.
The air tightened.
Kade didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The threat sat in the silence between them.
The man’s smile faded slightly.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Then
“You can’t protect her,” he said. “Not from what she is.”
Nyra’s breath hitched.
“What does that mean?” she demanded.
No one answered.
That was worse.
Kade’s hand flexed slightly at his side.
Nyra noticed.
He was holding something back.
Again.
But harder this time.
Like it was getting more difficult.
The man stepped forward another inch.
“That connection you feel?” he continued. “It won’t save you.”
Nyra swallowed hard.
“Then what will?”
The man’s gaze locked onto hers.
“Nothing.”
The word landed heavy.
Final.
Nyra felt it sink into her chest.
But something inside her pushed back.
Hard.
“No,” she said again, firmer this time.
Kade’s head turned slightly at that.
She didn’t look at him.
Didn’t need to.
“I’m not your ‘asset,’” she continued. “I’m not your experiment, your problem, or whatever twisted thing you think I am.”
The man watched her.
Carefully.
Then
“You’re worse.”
Nyra’s stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?”
But again
No answer.
Instead, the forest behind him shifted.
More movement.
More presence.
Time was running out.
Kade exhaled slowly.
Decision made.
He turned slightly toward Nyra.
“Listen carefully,” he said.
Nyra frowned. “Why does that sound like I’m not going to like what comes next?”
“Because you won’t.”
Great.
“Then try me.”
A beat.
Then
“I’m going to claim you.”
Nyra’s entire body went still.
“What?”
The word came out sharp.
Disbelieving.
Angry.
Kade’s expression didn’t change.
“It’s the only way to protect you.”
Nyra stared at him like he’d lost his mind.
“No, Absolutely not. That is not happening.”
“It will bind you to my territory. My authority. They won’t be able to take you.”
Nyra shook her head immediately. “I don’t care. I’m not trading one cage for another.”
Kade’s eyes darkened slightly.
“It’s not a cage.”
Nyra let out a short, bitter laugh. “You just said you’d own the bond.”
“I said I’d protect you.”
“That’s not the same thing.”
Silence stretched.
Tight.
Heavy.
Behind them, the man watched with quiet interest.
Like this was the part he’d been waiting for.
Kade stepped closer.
Nyra didn’t move this time.
But her entire body was tense.
Ready.
“Nyra,” he said, voice lower now. “If they take you”
“They won’t,” she cut in.
“They will.”
The certainty in his tone hit harder than anything else.
Nyra’s breath hitched.
But she didn’t back down.
“Then I’ll fight.”
Kade held her gaze.
“You won’t win.”
“Then I’ll die trying.”
The words came out before she could stop them.
Raw.
Real.
Something shifted in Kade’s expression.
Something deeper than before.
Not anger.
Not frustration.
Something heavier.
Like he hadn’t expected that answer.
Like it changed something.
Behind them, the man let out a quiet breath.
“Interesting,” he murmured.
Kade ignored him.
Completely.
His focus stayed locked on Nyra.
Then
Slowly
He stepped back.
Nyra blinked.
That… wasn’t what she expected.
“You’re not?” she started.
“No.”
Her breath caught.
Relief hit first.
Sharp.
Immediate.
Then confusion followed.
“Why?”
Kade didn’t answer right away.
His jaw tightened slightly.
Like the decision cost something.
Then
“Because you said no.”
Nyra stared at him.
Thrown off balance in a completely different way now.
Behind them, the man’s smile returned.
Wider this time.
“That’s your mistake, Alpha.”
Kade didn’t react.
But the air around him did.
Darkening.
Sharpening.
The man took another step forward.
“Because if you won’t claim her”
He tilted his head slightly.
Eyes locking onto Nyra.
“…we will.”
Nyra’s blood ran cold.
Kade moved instantly.
Stepping fully in front of her.
This time
There was no hesitation left.
“Try,” he said.
The single word hit like a blade.
The forest exploded into motion.
And Nyra realized
Letting her go might have just started something far worse.
