CHAPTER 4

"I cannot explain anything because there is nothing to explain, Dina" John said to the second Wolf, who apparently is called Dina.

"I really do not want an explanation, you do not owe me one. I just want to know who the other wolf is and why it was after me."

"Smart one we got here... But sometimes stupid. Anyway, we don't know who she was and why she was here. We just know that she's been following you for a while now and it's shady," Dina told me.

"Okay then. Thank you for saving me from possible impending doom. I really appreciate that. As for your wolf counterparts, I will not tell anyone, though you do not seem as though you are bothered by me knowing your little secret."

"John might not be, because he trusts you and fawns over you like you're some baby deer but I trust you as much as a gazelle trusts a lion. So watch your every step. One wrong move and you will be gone. Goodbye Laura. See you at home."

She said the last statement looking at John. After that she took off. What did she mean by see you at home? Were they dating? Is John married? I tried checking but I couldn't see his left hand. So I stood up and started walking back home when he called my name. "What is it John?" Why was I angry? What is wrong with me? Yes Dina is pretty, maybe prettier than me... What am I thinking? Am I Jealous? Is this truly happening?

It seems like in falling in love. It can't be.

"Laura", John said softly, like he was afraid his voice could hurt me. I am not weak. I will not fall for this.

"What do you want John?" I asked him impatiently. "I'm not scared of you. I ways knew Weres existed, I'm happy that I finally met one, two, I guess three if you count the other one who was about to maul me. I don't need an explanation. I really do not. I am fine and do not call my mame like that. Like I'm some child you're afraid of hurting. I'm very capable of handling myself."

"I'm sorry. I don't know what I'm sorry about but I truly am. I gained your trust and I hid something this big from you." John apologized. I forgot to add that over the past week John had become softer, it almost seemed like he was in love with me. He couldn't be.

"I don't care. It's not my place to know your secret. You haven't broken any trust. If you hadn't told me I wouldn't have cared. It is your secret. We are still friends."

He stood up to meet me where I was, with each step he winced. It was obvious that hit he took was fatal. When he reached where I was he took my face in his hands. His hands were hot and he looked into my eyes and something flashed in them, was that... Fear? What was he afraid of? Why was he afraid? Was there another wolf behind me? Surely he wouldn't be afraid of another wolf. But he was injured... He moved closer and in the moonlight I could see that he was staring at my lips. Why would he be staring at my lips? I haven't eaten much today so maybe I was seeing things

"Laura, I'm sorry", he breathed on my lips and closed the space between us and the softest pair of lips touched mine. The kiss was quick and chaste like he was afraid that I'd reject him. When he pulled away he looked into my eyes and said "I'm sorry, I understand if you do not..."

I cut him off by kissing him back, more urgently and ferociously.

After what felt like hours, but was only a few seconds we broke apart for air.

"Does that answer you? Does this clear your doubts? I like you too,okay? But I'm not going to start something I cannot commit to. Right now my job is my priority and I really need to focus okay?" I explained.

"Wow."

"What? What do you mean by 'wow'?"

"I'm just surprised. You went straight to the point. There was no room for me say anything," he chuckled.

"Oh".

"No, no it's fine. I too am very much committed to my job and a few other things," he said and I could hear the laughter hanging off every word.

"Whatever", I said while rolling my eyes.

"Wait... That girl- Dina. Why did you kiss me? Aren't you with her?"

"Absolutely not"

" Why do you sound so irritated, she's a human... I mean wolf, I mean... What ever she is and she's very pretty. You guys would look great... "

"Let me stop you right there,okay? There is nothing and there will never be anything going on between us. That is gross, she's my sister"

I felt the heat crawl up my neck. " Oh my gosh, I am so sorry for assuming... It was very stupid of me to... " He cut me off by embracing me in his arms

"Laura, breathe. I do not have a problem with us just being friends. What ever you want. I'm down for it. Wait... Can you hear that? There's someone out there."

"Come out!", He called out, "I can smell you. Come out now!!"

Snarling and growling, but it wasn't another wolf, instead it was a man.

"What do you want?" John asked

"I want the girl, she's mine." He spoke

"You will never have her." John hissed

"What do you want with me?", I asked

He lunged at me but before he could reach me an arrow pierced his throat and he screamed out and fell to the ground with a thud.

I looked behind me and saw Dina.

"Stay back." She screamed and walked carefully towards the body and shot him through the heart twice. When she was done she looked up at us and said "Silver".

That explains why he couldn't get up. Silver is very deadly to Weres, but how did she know he was a Wolf?

"When I left I smelt something and I followed it, I saw a gathering of men, I was extra careful so they wouldn't sense my presence. I overheard them talking about using Laura for something. I couldn't hear them very clearly, but I saw when they selected him to get you. I quickly ran over to the house, I have a secret stash of silver. Do not look at me like that. I only have it for emergencies. I know it's dangerous and by the time I got back the man was gone. But his friends weren't so I shot them and ran over here to inform you but I was almost too late though. Now he's dead. They're all dead."

"This is very serious! This means that there are many people who are after you. It's now my job to look after you and protect you Laura." While looking at Dina, he said, " It is our job. And I promise no one will hurt you while I'm still alive."

" I can't believe this. Why me? Why is it me? What's so special about me that I'm a target? "

" I promise you, you're safe" John said while hugging me. I was enjoying the hug and the feeling of safety when suddenly he stiffened and started sputtering. "John, John, John, what's wrong?" I asked as he fell to the ground and then I saw it there was an arrow sticking out of his back so I yanked it out and then it dawned on me -silver. Dina was a liar!

"What is wrong with you? Why would you do that to your own brother?" I shouted.

"Well for starters, I know what you're thinking but I'm not a liar. Everything I said was true. They really were after you. You see once in a hundred years a pureblood is born. Growing up I heard about them but I had never seen one,until you. Why are these purebloods important? Well it is said that if you drink the blood of a pureblood, you acquire immunity.John... He wants to give all that up for love." She scoffed as she walked closer

"Do not come close to me." I said and took a step back. She held my hand before I got too far and bit into my neck. I screamed. I felt life slipping away from me when she suddenly stopped and we both fell to the ground. I opened my eyes and looked beside me to see her staring right back at me with an arrow sticking through her heart. She was dead.

Someone picked me off the ground and said "Laura, I'm sorry. I'm very sorry. Please forgive me" - that was John's voice. "John, it's not your fault. It's alright.", I said weakly

"I should have known. I promised to protect you but I failed." His voice sounded weird... Was he crying?

"John. Are you crying? Please don't. You protected me, you did. I know it took a lot for you to kill your sister and I am very grateful. You're wounded, we have to get you checked into a hospital. "

"Okay then. Let's go"

At this time the sun was beginning to rise. John carried me bridal style and he walked into the sunrise.
