Breaking Point

417 Words
The week dragged on, and Maya could feel the weight of Sophie’s betrayal pressing on her chest. Even her camera, usually a source of comfort, felt heavy in her hands. Every time she glanced at Adrian, her heart ached with a mix of longing and fear. Could she trust him with her heart if others around her were plotting against her? It all came to a head the night of the company gala. Maya had spent hours choosing a dress, perfecting her makeup, and rehearsing polite conversation for clients and photographers alike. She expected Adrian to be there—supportive, steady—but when she arrived, her worst fear materialized. Eleanor Hayes. Adrian’s ex-fiancée. Standing tall in a shimmering gown, her smile wide and confident, Eleanor approached Adrian as if claiming something that had never fully belonged to her. “Adrian,” she said, voice smooth and familiar. “It’s been a while.” Adrian’s expression froze. Maya watched, heart pounding, as he politely excused himself from Eleanor and approached her. “Maya…” he began, but she stepped back instinctively, unable to meet his gaze. Eleanor’s eyes lingered on Maya, a subtle smirk forming. “I see you’ve met Adrian’s… new muse,” she said lightly, though the words carried an edge sharp enough to cut. Maya felt a surge of anger and betrayal. She turned abruptly, fleeing to the nearest exit. Adrian called her name, but the music and crowd swallowed his voice. Outside, the cool night air hit her like a wave. Her chest tightened, tears threatening to spill. She sank onto the curb, feeling the sting of rain from earlier days mirrored in the cold drizzle now soaking her coat. He’s gone back to her, she thought bitterly. All the closeness, the laughter, the late nights… it meant nothing Meanwhile, inside the gala, Adrian’s face was stormy with frustration. He had tried to refuse Eleanor’s manipulations, but the firm’s expectations and her insistence forced him into attending. He hadn’t expected Maya to witness even a fraction of it—or to interpret it so wrong. By the time he reached the exit, Maya was gone. Only the faint echo of her footsteps remained. He gritted his teeth, knowing he had to find her before the misunderstanding festered into something neither of them could recover from. But as the city lights reflected off puddles in empty streets, Maya walked alone, convinced that the cracks in their connection might already be too deep to repair.
