The City Without Her

402 Words
The city never felt so empty. Not the lights, not the noise, not the ceaseless motion of people chasing dreams—it all seemed meaningless without Maya. Adrian walked the streets aimlessly, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, replaying the gala over and over in his mind. He had tried to explain, tried to reach her, but by the time he left the building, Maya had disappeared into the night. The cold air stung, but it was nothing compared to the ache in his chest. Every laugh they had shared, every fleeting touch, every late-night conversation now felt like a fragile memory slipping through his fingers. Meanwhile, Maya wandered the city herself, camera in hand though she barely noticed the subjects she captured. Her heart felt heavy, a mix of betrayal and sorrow, though she knew rationally that Adrian hadn’t intended to hurt her. Still, the sight of him with Eleanor, however manipulated by circumstance, had been a blow she couldn’t ignore. She paused on a bridge overlooking the East River, the city skyline shimmering on the water’s surface. The lights blurred with her tears, and she wondered if she had made the right choice by stepping away. She loved him—she couldn’t deny it—but trust was fragile, and she wasn’t sure hers could survive another disappointment. Back at Carter & Reed, Adrian couldn’t focus. Blueprints blurred before his eyes, and Liam noticed his distracted state. “You’ve lost your edge,” Liam remarked casually. “Something bothering you?” Adrian clenched his jaw, refusing to admit the truth. He had allowed himself to get close to someone again—and now she was gone. The city, which had always been his playground, felt like a cage without her in it. Days passed. Emails from Maya went unanswered, and calls went straight to voicemail. Adrian realized the depth of what he had risked: his heart. He was used to controlling everything—projects, deadlines, designs—but love was not a blueprint, and he had no instructions to follow. Finally, he stood on the rooftop of his own building, gazing at the horizon. The skyline was breathtaking, yet empty without her laughter echoing beside him. He whispered her name to the wind, a silent vow to find her, to fix what had been broken, and to prove that their story under the city lights was not yet over.
