Chapter 1Things had been strained between me and my mom’s parents for the past few years, thanks in part to the tension Uncle Tony fostered between us. I’d tried to tell Grandma more than once that I had called, but my uncle had picked up and said they weren’t home. “Tony wouldn’t do that to his favorite sister’s son,” Grandma had said when I tried to explain I’d called more than once, simply to be told they weren’t available to take my call. “Why would he?” She was more inclined to believe her grandson would lie about it rather than that her only surviving son would do that to his nephew.
