Destiny’s POV:
It was late Saturday morning, around eleven a.m. Kayden, Corey, Isaac, Nathan, Roy, and I were lounging peacefully on the beautiful California Coronado beach. We chatted idly about old times and all the fun we'd had over the years.
"Maybe we should all go out tonight? Who knows when we will have the time to get together again after we start working?" Corey exclaimed.
The rest of us all spoke up in unison with an enthusiastic "Yeah!"
"But where should we go?" Kayden asked.
"How about that nice bar we used to go perform at?" Suggested Isaac.
"Ahh, now that brings up memories. When did we start our band? Was it in middle school?" I asked, thinking back to the past.
"Yeah. And once we got into high school, we begged the bar owner to let us perform there on Saturday nights. I remember we would spend all our after-school time practicing throughout the week." Isaac replied.
"It helped that your dad knew the bar owner, Isaac!" Nathan replied with a broad smile.
"It was still a surprise though, that after all these years we met up at the academy and picked it all back up again like we didn't miss a beat." Roy replied with a smile.
"It was fun for all of us so it made it easy." Kayden replied.
"Was fun? It still is!" I said enthusiastically.
We all laughed as familiar smiles crept across our faces.
It was a little after one p.m. when we all headed back to the house to get ready for our night out. I was standing alone in my room looking into my closet. What to wear, what to wear, I thought as I spotted a black dress hanging in the back. It had clear plastic around it and didn't seem like it had ever been worn. Oh, that's right! I ordered it but never got to wear it, I remembered as I pulled it from the plastic. It was a strapless solid black cocktail dress that stopped just above my knees. It looked as if it was form fitting, so I was skeptical that it would fit. I was curvy but not overweight. Some people would call me fit, but I don't agree. I was no athlete, though I did exercise early in the mornings when I was at the academy. I put the dress on my bed and quickly headed to the bathroom.
After showering, I returned to my room. I went into my closet to retrieve a black pair of heels and the black hand bag I had purchased to go with the dress. I was used to wearing heels so much that they never really bothered my feet. I wore heels all through high school because all the students at the high school had to wear school uniforms. The boys wore black slacks with a white button-down long sleeve shirt and a red vest while the girls wore black knee-length skirts with white button-down long sleeve shirts. Heels looked better than tennis shoes with the uniform, so I always wore heels.
I think back to those days and I remember when I spilled milk on my skirt at breakfast. Isaac had an extra pair of slacks so he offered them to me. We had to take them to the home economics room so we could hem the legs up and take the waist in. The teachers weren't happy about my change in uniform, and I looked a mess in pants that were too big with heels peeking out from the bottom. Isaac went and explained what had happened and managed to keep me out of trouble.
I quickly bring myself back from the past and put on my dress. To my surprise, it fit perfectly and I stepped back from my vanity mirror with surprise at how good it looked on me. Not bad, I said aloud to myself as I sat down in front of the large mirror. Let's see, make-up, make-up, what color should I wear? I apply my makeup with precision and once my makeup is finished, I remove the towel from my damp hair.
I think I'll straighten my hair today, I said to myself as I got my straightener from its bag. I immediately started on my hair, making sure it was straightened to a smooth silky shine. Once I was finished, I grabbed the things I would need for the evening and tossed them in my bag, threw them on my shoulder, and put on my heels. It was five p.m. when we all left for the bar that was only a few blocks away.
As we entered the bar a familiar chime rang out over our heads and the bar owner, Sam, greeted us with a familiar smile.
"Hey guys! Long time no see. What brings you in tonight?" Sam asked.
"Oh, you know, we thought we'd stop by for old times' sake." Corey replied.
Sam's face lit up like a firework and I looked around the familiar bar to see a bunch of the regulars smiling fondly at us.
"So does that mean we're going to get a special performance tonight as well? All the stuff is still set up on the stage over there." Sam exclaimed happily, and we all smiled.
"Yeah, we'll give you a show tonight, but first let us celebrate a bit." Isaac replied.
"Yes, of course! Your usual table is open, go ahead and have a seat." Sam said with a smile on his face.
We made our way to our usual spot and sat down. The table was large and always had two empty seats. We would always joke and say we needed to add two more friends to our group to fill the empty seats…, we never really did expand our group though.
Chief’s POV:
It was Saturday and Kyle had somehow managed to talk me into leaving the office for dinner. He always had a naturally bubbly personality that would suck you in and was especially flirty with ladies, but his good-natured attitude always lured me out of my comfort zone.
"I don't see the point in leaving the office to eat dinner, Kyle." I said in protest as we continued down the street.
"Come on Chief, it's bad to stay cooped up in that office all day. You need to get out more. Maybe you should find a cute girlfriend! Having someone cute to spend your time with would make you want to leave the office on days like today." He exclaimed excitedly with a large grin on his face.
He was completely ignoring me…, he was off in his own little fantasy land again. In this line of work, love often gets pushed onto the back burner. My job keeps me plenty busy, so I don't have time for love. I was in my late twenties and single. It's not like there is a shortage of women or anything, there are plenty around, but all of them are only drawn to me because of my position at work or because of money and I knew I didn't want a woman like that. My thoughts drifted as Kyle chatted happily to himself. Destiny's face floated across my mind and I was once again turning over those same questions that were bothering me in my mind. I wonder where she is today…
Kyle finally brought us to a stop in front of a bar and we were immediately greeted when we walked in with friendly hellos. The owner told us to have a seat wherever we liked, so I scanned the bar. There were quite a few people here; this must be a popular spot, I thought to myself as I looked out over the crowd of people and spotted someone I didn't expect to see.
"Oh, there's the new recruits from my department!" He said suddenly as he pointed to a guy sitting at the table with Destiny.
"Who's that hottie sitting with them, I wonder?" Kyle asked.
Before I could answer, he was waving his hand in the air.
"Hey Roy!" He shouted loudly and everyone at Destiny's table turned to look at us.
Her eyes went wide for a minute as she watched us approach the table.
"Good evening Chief." She softly spoke to me with a smile.
"Hey no fair Chief! You know her?" Kyle exclaimed.
"Hi, I'm Destiny Silvers, I'm the Chiefs' new partner." She said proudly.
"Oh-ho, aren't you just a cutie!" Kyle replied as he reached his hand out to her chin.
A flashback of the look she had given me came rushing back and I started to reach out and stop him, but before I could, one of the guys quickly stood up and grabbed his hand, shaking it firmly.
"H-hi, I'm Isaac Hall, I'm a new recruit at the office as well. This is Corey Rainer, Nathan Adams, Kayden Ingram, and apparently you already know Roy." Isaac spoke firmly.
Everyone else stood and greeted us with their introductions and firm handshakes and I saw a look of relief on Destiny's face. Isaac, Corey, and Roy were of medium build and just a few inches shorter than myself. Isaac had black hair with hazel eyes, while Corey and Roy had brown hair and dark brown eyes. Nathan and Kayden had smaller builds and were just a hair shorter than the others. Nathan had blonde hair with blue eyes and Kayden had blonde hair with green eyes. There was something different about this Kayden guy though. I couldn't put my finger on it but he was very feminine looking, in my opinion.
After the introductions were complete, Destiny offered up the two empty seats to Kyle and I. I took the seat next to Destiny.
"Aw man, why do you get to sit next to Destiny?" Kyle complained.
Destiny looked a little shocked at the comment but quickly composed herself.
"I'm the least likely of us to make her feel uncomfortable, that's why." I said coldly.
Kyle pouted to himself and Destiny spoke up, addressing the group she was with.
"So guys, what are we gonna do for tonight's show? What songs are we gonna sing?" She asked.
"What show are you talking about?" Kyle asked curiously.
"We used to come here every Saturday night and perform on stage. We would sing and play songs that we had practiced after school the week before. We decided to enjoy tonight and do another show here at the bar." Kayden explained.
"Can you sing any song?" Kyle asked.
"Well, I can't, they sing, not me." Kayden replied as he pointed to Destiny and the four guys.
"There's a book with a list of songs we can sing beside the stage. We just do it for fun, so it's not professional grade or anything." Destiny replied while trying to hide her embarrassment.
"So if I pick a song from that book you guys can sing it?" Kyle asked.
"Yes." Destiny replied.
Kyle's face lit up like a light bulb as he bounced to the stage to get the list of songs.
