CHAPTER 5: LATE PASS 🏀🏀

( CHERRY'S POV;)
Few days passed and i still felt like a stranger in a strange world where i do not belong.
Spain felt like a distant memory ~~warm streets, quiet mornings and a life i had being forced to leave behind.
My friends back there now avoided me cuz they thought i moved on, funny how they thought that.
And now , my third week at bridgerton, i was known my most people, cuz i was free to chat with.
I later joined a lot of activities, like the school's acting group, the cheering squad and a lot more, trust me and now i was rooting for a girls basketball team, which no one had ever thought of, i could start a team...... with coach Roland, he seemed pretty nice, i thought.
I was also preparing for my first test.
At Bridgerton, every new student takes a test to know their ability and that didn't freak me.
Talking about leadership, I heard everyone were on trial, and Tasha was contesting for president and Luca for vice an her own squad, but there wasn't a rival so she had great chances of winning.
Most students would go for her because she's beautiful, intelligent and brave.
Now i was familiar with Bridgerton and wasn't nervous anymore, and I've never for once talked to Ethan, not like i was scared , just tryna avoid his problems, i had also begged Cassie to switch seats with me and she did after i treated her for lunch.
Yeah i had all the money i needed, so getting stuff for myself or my friends was minor to me , but still ,i don't brag.
" heyy, earth to cherry", Cassie brought me back to reality as i sat in the school garden.
"Cassie ', i said and she sat next to me on the iron made bench.
Soon bennie and natty joined us with ice creams as we chatted.
" have you heard about the big game coming up? ", bennie said.
" yeah the game with R&K academy", i said cuz i had read that on the school page last night and there were also horrible comments like....... golden ballers aren't a match........ their team captain is facing his rival, i smirked. That's a must watch game for me, i thought.
" during times like this, he gets really pissed", natty said and that was his business, i thought.
Ethan and his friends walked majestically in their training outfit, he was the one in the middle with the ball in his arms, luca by his left, mateo by his right, they looked so handsome, few students went after them as they passed by.
" you see that face?.. though moment", natty said and i smiled.
Just then we remembered it was sport time and we exclaimed.
" calm down girls, we are going to watch Ethan and his team play", natty said but i knew it was for her own benefits, to watch Luca play, i felt she had a crush on him.
" are you insane natty, this is risky, we're supposed to be at the gym", Cassie spoke in fear as we All laughed.
" there's a big game coming up, so more focus on practice and cheers", i said grinning..
" ooohhhhhh, now i get", she said smiling.
We were already on our sport wears and it looked good on us. The boy's and girl's were same so i guessed they had put our names at the back of the tee shirt because of that.
I had stood up with the intention of speaking to the coaches about the female team, which i wasn't sure of .
We walked pass the sport center and to where the large basketball court stood alive with energy.
The sound of bouncing balls echoed in the air mixed with cheers and whistles.
That drew my attention, the seats were scanty because just few people were there, including our juniors which were beating Ethan's team and it was getting him really pissed.
Tasha and Mira on the seats watching patiently and also chatting.
" heyy Cherry let's have a sit", bennie said. " u shouldn't stand there.
Before i could respond, a loud shout rang across the court.
" PASS IT"
The ball flew across the air, fast and uncontrolled. I turned my head to late and THUD!
The basketball hit my shoulder sharply, knocking me slightly off balance. My bag slipped and my phone almost fell to the ground, that was unexpected, just one minute i wanted to have a sit and boom.... this.
Silence fell for half a second.
Then laughter erupted from the court.
" heyyy" , someone shouted. " watch the new girl , she's a lost puppy", they laughed further, i guessed that was mateo .
I frowned steadying myself, my eyes lifted towards the court.
And that was when i saw him.
He stood at the center, holding another basketball in one hand, his jersey slightly damp with sweat.
Tall, confidant and completely unbothered by the chaos he had just caused.
Ethan......
The school already knew him.....the bad boy of the college basketball team, i almost didn't believe cassy when she told me until the scene at the cafeteria, who the hell was he???
Rumors kept following him..... fights..... attitude problems..... broken rules.... bullying..... but his talents were lit and that made everyone overlook it.
He tilted his head slightly , studying me like i was an interruption.....how funny.
" new girl", he said lazily, voice calm but sharp. " U should learn how to walk or sit your arse down".
I blinked with disbelief flashing in my eyes.
" i should learn?", i repeated quietly.
My voice wasn't loud but it carried something different calm_ anger.
Ethan smirked faintly, bouncing the ball once against the ground.
" yeah ", he said. " this isn't a walking tour".
A few students nearby laughed expecting me to back down like everyone else did.
But I didn't move, he was beginning to get on my nerves.
I picked up my bag, dusted it slightly and looked directly at him.
" then maybe", i said softly. " you should learn how to aim", i said with no regrets.
The court went silent again
Even Ethan paused for a moment.
( AUTHOR'S POV;)
That was new.
Most people apologized. Most people walked away humiliated but she didn't.
For a second their eyes locked _ his full of amusement hers full of quiet anger.
Many phones were lifted as they took videos including their boss mira.
Then the bell rang in the distance breaking the moment .
Cherry turned away first and walked off without another word, leaving the sound of bouncing balls and confused whispers behind her.
Ethan watched her leave.
A slow grin formed on his lips.
" interesting", he muttered under his breath.
And for the first time, the game didn't feel more important than the girl who just walked away.

( ETHAN'S POV;)
Orientation was hell.
Coach kept yelling and Luca kept asking if i was okay because i missed three shots in a row.
I wasn't okay
I kept seeing her
Dark hair, tired eyes, that accent i couldn't quite place.
Later in the hall way, I heard it, students kept talking about what happened and when i passed by they'll stop.
" that's her........the new girl
" cherry.....the one who talked back to Ethan.
Cherry.....
The name fit her, sweet but sharp, i said it to myself twice just two see how it sounded.
By last period my head was pounding and we kept catching glances though she switched seats with her friend , i didn't know why.
Her angry little face focused on lecture, i could see her heart beat faster, i don't know but she just seemed different.
Last period ended and i was heading to the side gate where my car was packed, yeah i never mentioned.
Then i saw her.
Alone.
Standing by the wall gate, earbuds in staring at nothing.
she didn't see me coming, i should have kept walking but i didn't.
She looked up and for a second we just stared.
I smirked cuz that's what i fo and i just headed to where my car was parked, i started the car and drove pass her with one last stare and i was gone.
( CHERRY POV;)
I got home with the whole incident still playing in my mind, i gave him a piece of my mind and just had to walkout because my anger issues were uncontrollable.
" cherry, was it a dream or you talked back at Ethan", violet said as she badged into my room.
" who cares and u shouldn't come into my room without knocking", i warned and she forced a smile.
" really! well he's gonna come for you", she said smiling.
" then I'm waiting, yeah I can't be a coward just like you", i blurted out even if i wasn't supposed to, her face turned pale, she just stared for a while and walked away.
Whenever she comes into my room, she always left that way cuz she talked too much.
We all sat at the dining table for dinner, as we ate peacefully, the couple and i kept catching glances, i supposed they were guilty of something..
" so cherry, how are you fairing in your new school?", daisy decided to break the silence and i dropped my cutlery.
" i guess she's having fun right cherry? ", violet asked smiling in pretence.
" well, i said faintly. " i just lost my appetite".
I stood up to leave as my dad called but to no avail, i walked into my room furious, everyone was getting on my nerves, i had to prepare for my test the next day.
I picked up my phone as more messages kept coming in, Cassie and the girls asked if i was fine and i had replied them, and the class group , there was an announcement: service day on Friday
1st group: Ethan, cherry, tasha, jake
2nd group: Cassie, emman, bennie, Luca
3rd group: Mira, natty, Calvin, Mateo......
My eyes widened on seeing Ethan and i in the same group.
