A few days after the whole café thing, I laughed at Lacey as she spoke about some guy in her law studies who had asked her if she was studying law so she knew how to get out of being locked up for her protesting in the future along with getting all the people in her hippy cult off of charges. She was telling me how she had looked him square in the eye and told him that was exactly what she was doing, and her first protest would be to get any guy with a d*ck size as small as his to be kicked out of the class due to him having to compensate for his misgiving by becoming g a grade A d*ck head with an oversized ego.
We were walking through the halls to get to the canteen and I had been too busy looking at her to see Tammy heading my way. It wasn't until I knocked into someone and nearly fell over that I looked up and saw it had been her that I had walked into.
She was looking at me with a disgusted look and a group of equally sour-faced girls around her.
" Eww don't touch me, I don't want your small town hillbilly germs, "she hissed.
I looked at her in shock " What ? " I asked her and she huffed flicking her hair over her shoulder.
" You heard me" she snapped.
I frowned. " You know Toby is from the same town, right ? And I have seen you rubbing up all over him plenty "I gritted back. I may quake in fear when those two are near, and usually I avoid confrontation. But after dealing with girls like these for, well, forever. My mouth was sharp. I always stuck up for myself against her type. Hell, I had years of practice with Toby's on-off girlfriend from back home, Hailey. I had heard nearly every insult coming from her. I always spoke back, but it didn't change anything, they always came back with more.
" Toby may be from there, but he isn't a poor loser like you" she volleyed back, her face screwed up in hatred at the fact I was talking back.
" Again, from the same house, same parents, same money " I sighed.
She narrowed her eyes , hating I was making sense and her insults were well quite frankly lame.
The I saw something shift on her face a confident smirk appeared.
" Actually, the money is his dads, your mum was just a gold digging wh*re that stole someone else's man" she threw at me, and that was it, argument won. She hit the sore spot. Lacey was the one to step in now when she saw me wince and not retort back.
" Tammy, ain't that what you are doing? Going for Toby because you know his family has cash. Besides, who even acts this way anymore? What's wrong? Do you know you peaked in high school, so now you're clinging to your mean b*tch reputation, hoping to stay relevant? You look pathetic "Lacey snapped at her.
Tammy glared at Lacey, but Lacey glared right back. Not moving an inch.
Tammy eventually huffed. " Come on girls, let's not catch hilly billy and hippy germs from these two" she snapped and pushed between us both, making us both step back as she barged through us. I watched as she went and, of course, not far behind us walking this way was Toby and Trent. Tammy walked straight up to Toby and practically threw herself into his arms.
" Baby" she cooed, rubbing her chest against his.
" Tammy " Toby said down at her, wrapping an arm round her waist, but he didn't look down at her even though he had spoken down. His eyes were on me.
" Come on, let's go eat" Lacey said, tugging at my arm. I looked and saw one of the other girls buzzing around Trent. But he wasn't looking at her either. He was staring at me too. I turned away and let her lead me away.
She started ranting under her breath about some folks just being assh*les, and they never grow up, and that karma is a b*tch and what goes round comes around.
We walked into the canteen and picked up trays and walked down the line grabbing our food. Scanning our student cards at the end , we then walked and sat at a table in the corner. I had been quiet, and she ranted, but when we got seated she nudged me. " You OK ? " She asked.
" I'm fine, yea girls like her don't bother me much," I told her, and even though it was mostly true that sad young version in me still remembered how much I had cried over the mean comments and wished that I could just fit in. How lonely it felt being the outcast. And if you hear something enough times, you start to believe it.
" Good, now let us plan your next outing. There is a party tomorrow night. It isn't a big one, just a small gathering of some people in my English literature class, a few bottles of wine, a casually dressed kind of gathering and pizzas. The two dickwods would never know about something like that. It's too far out of their social circle. I told them you were my plus one. They were cool with it. We both have late starts tomorrow, so it works out well," she said, smiling at me.
I nodded as I picked up my fork and stabbed it into a french fry " Sounds good and sounds completely like something they would never attend. Yeah, I'm down, "I tell her, her smile grows wider, and she does a little shimmy dance in her seat.
" Excellent, it's settled then we are going. I'm glad you haven't shied away because of last week," she said and started eating her own food.
She was talking about the last disaster of a night out, the whole dress and n****e thing.
" Nope, I am determined for them two to not ruin everything for me and have me locked away in my room scared for the next three years. If smaller intimate gatherings are the way forward for me, then so be it " I had a feeling they would be more my sort of thing anyway.
" I'll grab the wine " she said. I was eating another french fry when their group walked in. Toby and Trent were walking at the back of them all talking quietly, it looked like they were having a heated discussion. Trent looked p*ssed. He said something to Toby and Toby looked to sigh. Then Trent looked around the room until his eyes landed on me. Toby looked over too. I quickly looked down and continued eating. When I next looked back up after I finished eating, Tammy was sitting at the side of Toby fawning all over his, her hands reaching up to stroke his hair.
Toby smiled down at her, and she all but swooned.
" I need to head out. My next class starts soon, are you coming ? " I asked Lacey.
" No you go, I still have time to kill," she says, glancing up from her phone that she had been staring at.
" I'll see you tonight" I tell her. We had planned for a movie night in her room.
" Bring popcorn" she called after me as I walked away. I was emptying my tray when I felt someone come up beside me. I looked to the side to see Trent there. He dumped his tray in the bin then glanced at me sideways.
I tensed waiting for something to come from him. He raised an eyebrow. Looked me up and down a slow glance, winked at me and then turned and walked away. I blew out a breath that I had been holding and looked over my shoulder at his retreating back. What the hell were they planning ? That wink was definitely a get ready for it wink or something.
