At last, the light of a full moon filled my dull chamber. It's radiant glow gleaming off the many mirrors and crystalized reefs that lined my bedroom walls, until it reflected on my face through my favorite urchin mirror. My usual pale features looked now rosy and lively in the mirror as excitement beamed through my pores. My deep ruby locks levitated around my face as all hair did when submerged in water.
I looked at myself. There were only two rules in the Mer world.
Number one. Never use your siren’s song. It was forbidden, and the consequence had cost me my most cherished mermaids.
Number two. Never interact with mortals.
I was about to break one of these rules. I knew I shouldn’t, but I couldn’t stop what I had already painstakingly planned out. It was worth it. My eyes traveled over my face and then flicked back to my eyes. It would be worth it. It had to be.
Quickly, I grabbed my favorite seaweed hair tie and pulled my hair back with it. Sliding over my head a starlight blue mortal style sundress that I had gotten from my sister for my recent 24th birthday. It was gorgeous and shimmered in the water - much like it would in the sun. It curved around my slender hips tightly, showing off the features that most maidens dreamed of. Though, I'd never been interested in such things.
I slid through my bedroom window, cutting through the water quickly - as if the next four days would disappear before I reached the ocean's surface. Four days, that's all I'd have this month. Damn.
Reaching the shore came quicker than I had remembered when I was young, but my body was absolutely exhausted by the time I dragged myself onto the sand. It's warmth surprised me in the darkness. Though, I guess anything was warmer than the water, 800ft down. I leaned onto my arm, lifting myself just in time to see my fins disappear and two tiny mortal legs replace them. I was... Human. Or well... as close as I'd get. I stood - balancing myself to the best of my abilities. No matter how many years it had been I still couldn't get the hang of mortal feet at first. Loser. The word bounced around in my head. I was the loser. I didn't follow the rules, in fact, most of the time I broke them, but rules were meant to be questioned. At least, that's what I told myself.
I looked towards the woods ahead of me - noticing the bright lights of the city of Lochlyn behind it. Cursed, two-legged, demons. A humming thrummed in my chest and rippled off my lips. Light like the moons glimmer and soft as the sea at bay - the melody of a million years swam into the air the way we mermaids did the ocean. One of my few powers unleashed, and just like that my gorgeous hair fell from its tie, dry and full of bouncing curls that flowed down my back like a cascading waterfall. My dress was no longer wet and sparkled like stars, just as I had envisioned it would. My cheeks felt warm once more and a rye smile quirked my lips.
The body of a siren turned mortal.
