CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR Although it was late afternoon, neither man had had time for lunch, and they were both famished. The bakery was closed for the day, but a short way from the Station there was a BBQ grill open 24/7. It was a favorite hangout for police because of their frequently irregular mealtimes. Both ordered the Carolina pulled pork with slaw and the obligatory sweet iced tea. In the rural South, tea meant sweet and cold. If you had diabetes, you ordered unsweet. Most places did not offer the hot version. Unlike the Western-style BBQ, which was heavy on tomato and ketchup, the North Carolina sauce was vinegar-based, and had a tangy, refreshing flavor. Brian and Greg dug in with gusto. It was delicious and hit the spot. Greg was quiet, and finally Brian initiated the conversation.
