"There are rules."
Ethan's voice broke the silence as the limousine came to a smooth stop before the towering gates of Knight Manor.
My eyes lifted to the mansion beyond the window.
It was magnificent.
A masterpiece of white marble and towering pillars, surrounded by perfectly sculpted gardens and fountains that shimmered beneath the afternoon sun.
It should have felt welcoming.
Instead...
It felt like a prison waiting for its newest inmate.
I reached for the door handle.
"Not yet, Mrs. Knight."
My hand froze.
Ethan calmly reached into his briefcase and withdrew a black leather folder.
He placed it carefully on my lap.
Embossed in silver across the cover were four words.
THE KNIGHT MARITAL AGREEMENT
I frowned.
"I thought the marriage certificate was enough."
"It made you Mr. Knight's wife."
His expression remained unreadable.
"This determines the terms of your marriage."
A knot tightened in my stomach.
"You mean... this wasn't discussed before the wedding?"
"It was never intended to be."
I looked up sharply.
"What does that mean?"
"Mr. Knight believed you would have refused."
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
Slowly, I opened the folder.
The first page contained a single sentence.
The following rules shall remain in effect throughout the duration of this marriage.
I turned the page.
Rule One.
Mrs. Knight shall address Mr. Knight as Sir at all times.
A short laugh escaped me.
"Sir?"
"He's my husband."
"Those are Mr. Knight's instructions."
I swallowed my irritation and continued.
Rule Two.
Mrs. Knight shall not initiate communication with Mr. Knight under any circumstances.
Should communication be necessary, Mr. Knight will contact her himself.
"So if I need to speak to my own husband..."
"You wait."
His answer came without hesitation.
Another page.
Rule Three.
Mrs. Knight must return to Knight Manor no later than 4:00 p.m. each day unless prior permission has been granted.
"A curfew?"
"Mr. Knight values discipline."
I gripped the edge of the folder.
The next page.
Rule Four.
The west wing of Knight Manor is strictly prohibited.
No explanation.
No exception.
Just the rule.
I looked at Ethan.
"What's in the west wing?"
"I'm afraid that information is unavailable."
Of course it was.
I turned another page.
Rule Five.
Mrs. Knight shall not discuss this marriage with the media or any third party.
Mrs. Knight shall not question household staff regarding Mr. Knight's private affairs.
Every rule felt less like a condition...
And more like another brick sealing me inside a cage.
Then...
I reached the final page.
There was no rule.
Only a bold heading.
PENALTY CLAUSE
My eyes scanned the paragraph beneath it.
The color drained from my face.
"No..."
The word escaped before I could stop it.
"This... this can't be real."
Ethan remained silent.
I looked at him, hoping....praying....he would tell me it was some kind of joke.
Instead, he simply said,
"It is."
My hands trembled as I read the clause again.
"For every verified breach of this agreement..."
My voice caught.
"...Mr. Knight reserves the right to withdraw five percent of the financial protection currently sustaining Laurent Group?"
I stared at him in disbelief.
"You're telling me that every time I break one of these ridiculous rules..."
"My family's company pays the price?"
Ethan held my gaze.
"Those are the agreed consequences."
"This is blackmail."
"No."
His voice remained calm.
"It is a contract."
"I won't sign it."
"As you wish."
He reached for the folder.
Relief flickered inside me.
Then he spoke again.
"I'll notify the legal team, that Mr. Knight's acquisition of Laurent Group is to be suspended immediately."
The relief vanished.
I looked at him.
"So this was never a choice."
"It has always been your choice, Mrs. Knight."
His expression never changed.
"But every choice has consequences."
Silence filled the limousine.
I looked down at the agreement.
At the signature line waiting for my name.
At the future my father had begged me to protect.
Slowly...
With trembling fingers...
I signed.
Ethan accepted the folder with a single nod.
"Thank you."
He stepped out of the limousine and opened my door.
"Welcome to Knight Manor..."
I stared at the mansion.
Moments ago, it had looked like a palace.
Now...
It looked like a prison built from marble.
And I had just signed the document that
locked me inside.
