Vera watched in awe, as they approached the Soviet planes filling the air space around them. There were YAK"s, PE-2s and many other fighter planes that the Soviet Red Army had called up to stop the advancing German army.
They roared in unison as they flew toward the trapped Red Army unit. Vera had to wonder what those on the ground thought of the sky full of planes, all flying in the same direction, and close together. They must have looked like a swarm of locusts heading toward a feast.
There was no activity until they crossed over the territory where the Red Army had encircled the Germans.
