Finally, the day came with the news that the war was indeed over, and everyone had their papers to either continue in the service or to become civilians. It would be a few more days before they would be transported back to Moscow. Major Korkavic had received his new orders and had flown out two days earlier.
The all-female regiments convened in a large, town hall that had not been damaged by the bombings. There was laughter and gaiety among the women, and yet, there was an undercurrent of sadness.
Vera spotted Sophie and moved through the throng of women to try to reach her. When Sophie saw Vera, she let out a holler and grabbed her, hugging and kissing her cheeks. “You made it, Comrade Vera.”
“Thanks to you,” Vera said with tears forming in her eyes.
