Senior Major Voskolov called all the pilots and navigators to convene at base headquarters for a meeting. A map was spread out on the large wooden table. “We have been instructed to stop the enemy ferry from crossing the Terek River.” She outlined with her finger where the enemy forces would be coming from. “You will commence the attack at 1800 hours.” Vera checked her watch. They had four hours before they were to fly out and stop the Germans. She sighed deeply. None of the pilots got any sleep that day. All of them had to fly during the day because the additional pilots had yet to arrive. So not only were they flying their eight to ten sorties a night, but during the day they had to drop off supplies, spies, papers, generals and important information to the front lines.
