Chapter 2 (The Call)

“Oh my,oh my”Peridot said,gasping for air.

Uriah on the other hand had plonked his ass on the fallen log of wood which had a pine tree beside it.He ogled at the beautiful maiden who was gasping for air,it was really dark in the woods but her luminous skin shone like a shining star.

Peridot spotted him on the log of wood and walked towards him and sat beside him.

“You've been quiet Uri,what's the matter?”she asked at her realisation.

“Father wants me to get married to Mr Kurt's daughter”

“wow” was all Peridot could utter.Her stomach was churning with pain.He would leave her soon,he would never be with her forever.He would have three daughters with his wife and she'll be all alone with her mother as she never wants to get married to anyone else aside Uriah.

Uriah stared at her in astonishment. Was that all she could say? She doesn't even feel hurt or sad that he was getting married to someone else?...he thought bitterly.

This was one of the reasons why he never wanted revealing his feelings for her;she might hate him because of it.She just proved with her reaction now that she doesn't want to be with him.

“Yeah”Uriah breathed out in disappointment.

“What's her name?”Peridot asked sadly.

“He said she's Sofie.Don't you want to know if I really want to be with her or not? "Uriah asked amidst anger.Her unruffled attitude was getting on his nerves.

Peridot jerked lightly at his tone.Why did he sound pissed and not pleased ? She wondered.

“I do.Do you want to get married to Sofie? ”

“Never Peridot ”

“Why?”

That was the question Uriah was scared of answering but he initiated it right?he ought to complete what he started.He cleared his throat as he turned to face Peridot.

It's now or never.

" Vow never to hate on me or break off our friendship if I told you ”Uriah said pleadingly.

Peridot blinked her eyes at him.What was he hiding from her,is it something bad? She wondered.

“Are you in love with another girl”Peridot asked suspiciously.

“You still have not replied me”Uriah recollected and Peridot sighed.

“Fine.I vow”

“Promise?”Uriah asked with his lower arms crossed over his chest

“Promise”Peridot replied with her lower arms crossed over her chest.

Uriah exhaled deeply,and he stared into Peridot's bright eyes.

“I love you Peridot ”

“of course I know Uri.You silly...”

“Not that way.I mean,I wish to spend the rest of my life with you.You're the woman I see my future with.You're the woman I wish to have my female kids with.Please don't hate on me now”Uriah pleaded and lowered his gaze to the floor,awaiting her reaction. Probably, this was the end of their friendship. He wished he hadn't done this,but there was no harm in trying right?

Peridot was stupefied. She rubbed her eyes thinking it's all an imagination. Everything he just said felt so surreal to her.But it was real.

He just surprised her with the most pleasant news ever.

She nudged his arm playfully with her elbow and he raised his head to look at her.She was feigning a frown.

“You i***t! how long has this been going on?”she asked tweaking his ear and he winced in pain.

“20 years now I think”

“what?!”Peridot covered her mouth,simultaneously releasing Uriah's ear.

“You mean since the very day we met? Uri!!”Peridot gasped as she hit him hard on the back almost hurting her hand as his back was really hard and her soft hand made a cracking sound as it collided with it.

“Uhuh,I've loved you since then”Uriah replied with a smile when he noticed she was not really angry with him.

“I love you too dummy ”Peridot said with a pout and spread her arms to hug him.

Uriah's heart bounced with joy when he heard her confession.

They both had been in love with each other all this while but had no Idea.

Uriah glanced at the beauty in his arms.How he wished they could live together and never have to die someday.

“URIYAH!”A loud voice called and it echoed in the woods.

Uriah's heart stopped beating.He glanced at Peridot whose head was still buried in his chest.He just heard his name,he was sure he just heard his name.

“URIYAH!”

Peridot jerked away from Uriah's arms when she heard his name again.

“You heard that, right?”Uriah asked her in a whisper and she nodded fearfully. They both looked around but couldn't see anything as it was pitch dark.

“I think we should head back home Uri.I'm getting scared already”Peridot said tremulously and stood up in fright.

As Uriah made to get up,a roaring wind began and Uriah began floating in the air.

“Uri”Peridot called fearfully but Uriah's eyes were shut and his body had turned pale.

Peridot jumped up to touch him but the wind took him deep into the forest.Peridot made to chase after the wind but she stumbled on something and fell down.

“Ouch!!”She winced in pain and tried getting up but her leg made a cracking sound,she's sprained a joint in one of her legs.

“Uri!!”Peridot screamed but everywhere was still calm.The wind had gone and there was no sign of Uriah.

Peridot stood up and tried walking towards the forest but ended up limping.As she leapt,different sounds began emitting the forest and her heart trembled.She was scared but she needed to find Uriah.

“Hmmm”She heard a voice hum in front of her and she pivoted around and began running with difficulty. She heard footsteps behind her but tried not looking back as she was dead scared.

“Someone help!! ”She screamed but stumbled on something again and fell down.she winced in pain and raised her head up but no one was there.

“I need to leave this place”She said in her heart and stood up.

She stared at her left,she could see transparent beings going back and forth in circles but she ignored them.

“They must be spirits.That have eaten Uri.oh,how I wish I had sat down so they could take us together.I deserve to die”Peridot lamented as she continued running with difficulty.

Zachary opened the door with the purpose of welcoming his son but his face creased into a frown when he found the pauper,Kehlani, in front of him.

“What do you want here Kehlani? ”

“Where is Peridot? Ma Susanne said she saw Peridot and Uriah together ”

Roxanne was sitting on the bench inside the cottage as at then but on hearing Uriah's name,she stood up and rushed to the door.

“Uriah and Peridot are always together,so what's the novel thing there?”Zachary asked with a scowl on his face.

“It's late in the night,so what could two adults be doing outside their homes this late?”Kehlani asked.

“I do not want to think immoral things”Zachary raised his hands up and left the door for the two women.

“You should get Peridot married off or something.That girl is the sole reason why my son has refused to get married”

“I can easily say that about your son as well”Kehlani gave her an evil eye but Roxanne ignored it and squinted her eyes a little when she spotted a white skinned figure limping towards her cottage.

“My lord,someone's coming to our cottage”Roxanne called to Zachary's notice and Zachary came forward.

Kehlani turned around,immediately, she could recognise the white skinned figure_it was her daughter,Peridot.

“Peridot”She called in relief and rushed towards her daughter .She noticed Peridot was limping and wondered why.

Kehlani looked behind Peridot but there was no Uriah.

“Where is Uriah?”Zachary asked sternly as he approached the two females. Peridot burst into tears and knelt down,making the three parents exchange looks.

“Where is Uriah?”Zachary reiterated.He could sense something wrong somewhere.Roxanne and Kehlani weren't left out in the suspicion.

“He...he was taken”Peridot's voice quivered and she wept the more.

“who was taken Peridot, who took Uriah away?”Kehlani bawled.

“we were...we were by our usual spot when we heard someone call out his name twice and then, a roaring wind began ,and it took Uriah into the forest.”Peridot said and coughed lightly as her voice shook.“I tried chasing after him but I stumbled on something and fell down.When I stood up to continue with the chase, I couldn't find Uriah. He was gone.I swear, I tried getting him back”Peridot said amidst tears and held her stomach as she wept the more.

“What's she blathering? Is she drunk or something? What do you mean by Uriah was taken? What wind ?how can a mere wind take a boy as healthy as Uriah,what are you gabbling about girl?!”Roxanne asked in disbelief. She found Peridot's explanation unbelievable.

“why didn't it take you instead,you're the weaker gender so the wind could have taken you instead,why didn't it take you?!!”Roxanne barked at Peridot who shook her head in tears.

Peridot cried the more,wishing she had died or something.

“Bring my son for me,you witch!”

“please pull yourself together Roxanne”Kehlani pleaded.She could understand the pain Roxanne was feeling now.She also found Peridot's explanation disbelieving. How can a mere wind lift up a grown up like Uriah,something was just not right.

The neighborhood was soon filled with people mourning Uriah's death.To them,Uriah was dead as no one survived the deepest part of the forest at night.

Dawn came in a flash but the residents of the hamlets didn't stop crying.Peridot was no where to be seen_Kehlani noticed.She became alarmed.
