THE PROMISE BENEATH THE BLOOD

593 Words
Valeria woke to darkness and the taste of blood. Her wrists ached against the ropes, but her mind was steady. She had planned for this — every move, every backup, every trigger set in place. They thought she was broken. They had no idea she’d already set the end in motion. ⸻ At the Moretti mansion, rage consumed Luca. He’d tracked her last signal, his heart pounding with dread. When he burst into his father’s office, the walls shook with his voice. “Where is she?” Adriano looked up, calm and cruel. “The thief who destroyed us? She’s exactly where she deserves to be.” “You mean with you,” Luca hissed. “The real destroyer.” Adriano’s smirk faltered. “Watch your tone, boy.” “No,” Luca stepped closer, voice low and trembling. “You built this empire on pain — on her pain. You sold her, didn’t you? That little girl from years ago… you separated us.” Adriano’s eyes widened, the memory slicing through his pride. But before he could answer, the alarms blared. Valeria’s plan had activated. Files uploading. Systems burning. The empire collapsing. ⸻ Luca fought his way through the chaos until he found her — chained, bruised, but alive. “Luca…” she whispered, half in disbelief. He untied her quickly, pulling her close. “I’m here. I won’t lose you again.” But the door burst open — Adriano, gun in hand, fury twisting his face. “So it’s true,” he rasped. “You were the girl. The one I took from him.” Valeria’s voice shook. “You took everything from me!” Adriano’s eyes hardened. “Then I’ll finish it.” He aimed — but Luca stepped in front of her. “Don’t,” Luca said, his voice raw. “You’ll have to go through me first.” “Move!” Adriano shouted. “I won’t!” The air thickened — a heartbeat of silence. Valeria’s tears spilled as she clutched Luca’s arm. “Luca… there’s something you need to know—” He turned slightly, eyes softening. “What is it?” “I’m pregnant,” she whispered, voice trembling. “It’s yours.” His breath caught — shock, love, disbelief flashing all at once. And then — the gun fired. The sound shattered everything. Luca staggered, falling into her arms, blood blooming beneath her hands. “No! Luca, stay with me!” she cried, shaking him. He smiled faintly, fingertips brushing her cheek. “You gave me a reason to live,” he whispered. “And now… I’ll find my way back to you.” Then his hand went still. Valeria screamed — a raw, broken sound that echoed through the collapsing mansion. ⸻ Minutes later, her plan hit full force. Every file, every secret, every crime — broadcast to the world. Adriano’s empire burned from within as police sirens wailed in the distance. He was dragged out in handcuffs, shouting her name, his legacy crumbling under her vengeance. ⸻ Months passed. Valeria stood by her penthouse window, her baby’s soft coos filling the room. She gazed at him — her little miracle — and froze. Right over his tiny heart, a faint birthmark marked the exact spot Luca had been shot. Her tears fell silently as she whispered, “You kept your promise, my love. You came back to me.” The night sky glimmered beyond the glass — quiet, endless, and full of the ghosts of two hearts that had burned for one another.
