Chapter Five
White.
That was all Aurora could see.
The explosion swallowed the ancient chamber in a blinding flash, stealing every sound from the world. Her ears rang painfully as she squeezed her eyes shut and instinctively raised her arms to protect herself.
She waited for agony.
For the searing pain of shrapnel tearing through her body.
For death.
Instead...
She felt...warmth.
A strange, comforting warmth spread from deep inside her chest, flowing through her veins like liquid sunlight. It wasn't painful. It felt familiar.
Almost like coming home.
A powerful gust of wind erupted from her body.
The white light exploded outward in a massive shockwave.
Boom!
The force slammed into everyone in the chamber.
Marcus's soldiers were thrown through the air like rag dolls, crashing into the stone walls. Several wolves skidded across the floor, while dust and broken rock rained from the ceiling.
When the light finally faded, silence settled over the ruins.
Aurora slowly opened her eyes.
The silver grenade lay on the ground before her.
Untouched.
Its metal shell had been crushed into a flat disc as though an invisible hand had squeezed it.
Aurora stared at it in disbelief.
"I...I didn't..."
"You awakened."
Kael's voice was barely above a whisper.
She turned toward him.
He looked as shocked as everyone else.
His amber eyes were fixed on her, not with fear, but with something dangerously close to awe.
Marcus wiped blood from the corner of his mouth as he struggled to his feet.
For the first time since Aurora had met him...
He looked afraid.
"It can't be," he muttered.
"It's too soon."
Aurora looked down at herself.
Nothing appeared different.
Except...
Her hands.
Tiny strands of golden light danced across her fingertips before disappearing into her skin.
"What is happening to me?"
No one answered.
Instead, every wolf in the chamber lowered itself onto one knee.
Even Kael.
Aurora's eyes widened.
"What are you doing?"
Kael kept his head lowered.
"It is our law."
"I don't understand."
"You don't have to."
"I do!" she shouted, frustration spilling over. "Everyone keeps talking about me like I'm some kind of secret. People are trying to kill me. Wolves are bowing to me. You're kneeling in front of me! Someone tell me what's happening!"
Her voice echoed through the ruins.
Kael slowly stood.
His expression remained unreadable, but his eyes softened.
"I promised someone I would protect you."
"Who?"
He hesitated.
"I can't tell you."
Aurora laughed bitterly.
"Of course you can't."
She turned away from him, her chest rising and falling with every angry breath.
"I don't even know why I keep expecting answers."
Suddenly, footsteps echoed from the tunnel.
Not Marcus.
Not his soldiers.
Different.
Steady.
Confident.
An elderly woman emerged from the shadows, leaning on an intricately carved silver staff. She wore a dark cloak embroidered with crescent moons, and long silver hair spilled over her shoulders.
The wolves immediately lowered their heads.
Even Marcus looked uneasy.
"The Moon Priestess," he whispered.
The old woman's pale blue eyes settled on Aurora.
For a long moment, she simply smiled.
"I've waited twenty-three years to meet you."
Aurora folded her arms.
"Apparently everyone has."
The old woman chuckled softly.
"You have your father's spirit."
Aurora's smile vanished.
"My father died before I was born."
The priestess shook her head.
"No."
The single word hit Aurora harder than any explosion.
"No?"
"Everything you've been told about your past is a lie."
Aurora's knees felt weak.
"My mother..."
"Is not your mother."
The chamber fell silent.
Aurora stared at the woman, unable to process the words.
"No," she whispered. "You're lying."
"I wish I were."
The priestess stepped closer.
"Victoria Vale loved you as her own. She raised you. Protected you. Sacrificed everything for you."
Aurora's heart pounded.
"But she did not give birth to you."
Tears burned behind Aurora's eyes.
"No..."
Kael took a cautious step forward.
"Aurora..."
She held up a trembling hand.
"Don't."
Her voice cracked.
"Not one more word."
Every memory she had of her childhood flashed through her mind.
Every birthday.
Every bedtime story.
Every hug.
Were they all lies?
The priestess reached into her cloak and removed an old pendant—a silver crescent moon wrapped around a sapphire.
"This belonged to your mother."
Aurora stared at the necklace.
The instant her fingers touched it...
A vivid image burst into her mind.
A beautiful young woman with long black hair smiled down at a baby wrapped in crimson blankets.
She kissed the baby's forehead.
"I'll find you," she whispered through tears. "No matter how long it takes."
The vision vanished.
Aurora gasped, stumbling backward.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"Who...was she?"
The priestess's expression turned sorrowful.
"Queen Lyra."
Aurora looked at Kael.
His silence confirmed everything.
"So...it's true."
He closed his eyes briefly before nodding.
"Yes."
Aurora felt something inside her break.
Before anyone could speak again, a sinister laugh echoed through the chamber.
Marcus was smiling once more.
"Perfect."
He slowly backed toward the tunnel.
"The King will be delighted to hear she's finally awake."
Kael's face darkened.
"What king?"
Marcus's smile widened.
"The one who has been waiting for his daughter to remember who she really is."
He disappeared into the darkness before anyone could stop him.
The chamber fell deathly silent.
Aurora looked at Kael, fear filling her eyes.
"You told me I was safe."
Kael stepped closer, his voice quiet but resolute.
"I was wrong."
He looked toward the tunnel where Marcus had vanished.
"They've stopped hunting a missing girl."
He met Aurora's gaze.
"They're coming for their Queen."
