I followed Vincent out of the cell and up the stairs into the main building, keeping my head low and my mouth shut. I wondered what they wished to do with me, and why I was here. But I couldn’t ask those questions, I had to wait until they told me; until they saw it necessary that I should know. The halls were the same as the last I saw them, guards posted at every turn, it was most certainly impossible for anyone to move about unnoticed; it wasn’t like the prince’s home at all. We reached the room in just over ten minutes, my steps slow and unsure; though Vincent did not scold me, he must have known I would be unable to walk very well because of the way I was bound in the cell.
