Chapter Fourteen: The Last Battle

840 Words
The Blood Moon hung high above Moonridge. Its crimson light bathed the mountains in an eerie glow. The monstrous wolf of black mist towered over the forest, its glowing silver eyes filled with rage. Every step it took shook the earth. People screamed and fled as trees were ripped from the ground. Kai stepped in front of Lena. "This ends tonight." Lena looked at the warriors gathered behind them. For the first time in centuries... The Moon Pack and the Blood Fang Pack stood side by side. Old enemies. Now united. Alpha Alden raised his voice. "Tonight, we fight as one!" A chorus of powerful howls echoed through the valley. The battle had begun. --- The Guardian lifted his hand. "Destroy them." The shadow beast roared. Darkness spread across the battlefield like a storm. Werewolves charged. The creature answered with claws made of smoke and shadow. It struck the ground. A wave of dark energy threw dozens of warriors backward. Kai transformed into his massive black wolf. "Stay behind me!" he growled. Lena shook her head. "No." "I'm done hiding." --- Emma shifted into her silver wolf form and landed beside Kai. "You know..." She smirked. "This is definitely the craziest school year I've ever had." Kai laughed despite the danger. "I was just thinking the same thing." Together, they leaped into battle. --- Viktor fought beside Alpha Alden. Back to back. Claw against claw. Every old grudge disappeared. "We wasted too many years hating each other," Viktor admitted. Alden nodded. "No more." --- Meanwhile... Lena and Lyra stood before the ancient Moon Altar at the center of the battlefield. The crescent marks on their wrists glowed brighter than ever. Lyra reached for Lena's hand. "It's time." Lena nodded. Together, they placed their hands on the altar. Silver light erupted into the sky. The Moon Goddess's voice echoed across the valley. "Only united hearts can heal a divided world." The Guardian's smile vanished. "No..." He rushed toward them. "You don't know what you're doing!" --- Kai saw him. "LENA!" The Guardian raised his sword. Just before it could strike— Kai threw himself in front of Lena. The blade pierced his side. Time seemed to stop. "KAI!" Lena caught him before he fell. His shirt quickly turned red. "Kai... no..." He smiled weakly. "I promised..." "...I'd protect you." Tears streamed down Lena's face. "You don't get to leave me." "You promised we'd face this together." Kai reached up and gently wiped away one of her tears. "I'm still here." --- The Guardian laughed. "Love makes you weak." Lena slowly stood. Her grief turned into determination. "No." "It makes us stronger." The crescent mark on her wrist blazed with silver light. Lyra's mark answered. The entire altar glowed. Suddenly... Every werewolf on the battlefield felt the warmth of the Moon Goddess. The darkness surrounding the shadow beast began to c***k. The creature let out a deafening roar. The Guardian stumbled backward. "What?" "This isn't possible!" Lyra smiled. "You never understood the prophecy." "It was never about power." "It was always about unity." --- The Moon Goddess appeared above the battlefield, glowing with silver light. She looked at Lena. "You have made your choice." Lena nodded. "I don't choose one pack." "I choose peace." The Goddess smiled. "So be it." A pillar of moonlight descended from the heavens. It surrounded the shadow beast. The darkness screamed. The hatred that had fed it for centuries slowly dissolved into countless tiny silver lights. Within moments... The monstrous wolf disappeared. The battlefield fell silent. Only the Guardian remained. His powers fading. His knees hit the ground. "No..." "I was trying to save everyone..." "You were trying to control everyone," Lena replied gently. "And those are never the same thing." The Guardian closed his eyes. For the first time in centuries... He finally understood. He lowered his head. "I'm... sorry." The silver light surrounded him. When it faded... He was gone. Not destroyed. Simply released from the hatred he had carried for so long. --- Kai collapsed to one knee. Lena rushed back to him. His wound was deep. Too deep. She held him tightly. "Stay with me." His breathing grew weaker. "Lena..." "I love you." "I love you too," she whispered through her tears. The crescent mark on her wrist suddenly began to glow once more. A warm silver light spread from her hand into Kai's wound. The Moon Goddess's voice echoed one final time. "True love given freely is the strongest magic of all." Kai's wound slowly closed. His breathing steadied. His golden eyes opened. He smiled. "You saved me." Lena laughed through happy tears. "I guess we're even now." Kai gently took her hand. "I'll spend the rest of my life reminding you how grateful I am." Around them, the wolves of every pack raised their heads toward the sky. Instead of a howl of war... It was a howl of peace. The Blood Moon faded. The silver moon returned. And for the first time in centuries... The curse of hatred was broken.
