Chapter Nine: The Letter Under the Moon

668 Words
The warning horn echoed through the sanctuary. BOOOOOOM! Every werewolf sprang into action. Warriors rushed toward the gates, mothers gathered frightened children, and the peaceful sanctuary transformed into a fortress within seconds. Kai stepped protectively in front of Lena. "You have to come with me." Lena clutched the letter to her chest. "My mother's letter..." Kai looked at it, then at the entrance where distant howls grew louder. "Read it. I'll buy you as much time as I can." Before she could protest, he squeezed her hand gently. "I promise I'll come back." For a second, Lena forgot about the battle. She only saw Kai's golden eyes. She nodded. "Please... be careful." Kai smiled softly. "I always am." Then he turned and ran toward the battlefield. --- The chamber became silent once more. Alpha Alden stood near the doorway. "You should read it now." With trembling fingers, Lena unfolded the old letter. The ink had faded with time, but every word was still clear. --- My dearest Lena, If you're reading this, it means the truth has finally found you. First, I need you to know one thing... I have loved you every single day of your life. Tears blurred Lena's vision. She wiped them away and continued reading. I wanted you to grow up as an ordinary girl. I wanted you to laugh, make friends, fall in love, and never know the burden you were born with. But fate had other plans. Lena's hands trembled. You are the Moon Child. And one day, the moon would call your name. She took a shaky breath. There is one truth I hid from everyone... Even from the Moon Pack. Her heart raced. Your father is alive. Lena gasped. "What?" Alpha Alden looked just as shocked. She hurried to the next line. He didn't abandon us. He disappeared to protect you. Lena whispered, "He's alive..." She continued. When the time comes, don't judge him before hearing the truth. Everything he did... He did because he loved you. Tears rolled freely down her cheeks. She had spent eighteen years believing her father had never wanted her. Now... Everything she believed had changed. --- A loud explosion shook the sanctuary. Dust rained from the ceiling. Another horn sounded. Someone shouted from outside, "The eastern gate has fallen!" Alpha Alden's face darkened. "They're inside." --- Outside... Kai fought with everything he had. Three Blood Fang wolves circled him. He was exhausted. Cuts covered his arms. Blood stained his black fur. Yet he refused to retreat. Not while Lena was in danger. Viktor watched from atop a fallen stone pillar. "You fight well." Kai growled. "But you're protecting the wrong person." "The Moon Child belongs with us." Kai's eyes burned with determination. "She belongs nowhere except where she chooses." Viktor laughed. "You sound just like your father." Kai froze. "My... father?" "You still don't know?" Before Viktor could continue— Emma tackled one of the Blood Fang wolves away from Kai. "Less talking!" She grinned. "More fighting!" Kai laughed despite the danger. "Glad you're here." "Someone has to keep you alive." --- Back inside the chamber... Lena reached the final page of the letter. One last thing... If you ever meet a boy with golden eyes... Trust him. Lena's breath caught. Because destiny chose him long before either of you were born. She looked up slowly. "Kai..." Alpha Alden's expression softened. "So... your mother knew." Before either of them could say another word— The chamber doors exploded inward. A blast of splintered wood filled the room. Standing in the doorway... Was the cloaked stranger. Their hood still hid most of their face. But one thing was unmistakable. A glowing silver crescent marked their wrist. Exactly like Lena's. The stranger slowly removed the hood. Lena stared in disbelief. The person looked almost her age. Long silver hair. Piercing violet eyes. And a face that looked... Strangely familiar. The girl smiled. "So..." "We finally meet." "My name is Lyra." "And I'm the first Moon Child."
