Chapter Seven: The Silver Wolf

801 Words
The screams echoed through Moonridge. Smoke curled into the night sky as people ran through the streets in panic. "Run!" "Wolves!" "Get inside!" Lena's heart pounded as she sprinted after Kai. By the time she reached the town square, the peaceful Moonridge she had known for only a few days had become unrecognizable. Windows were shattered. Cars were overturned. People huddled inside shops, praying the nightmare would end. In the middle of the square stood three enormous wolves with glowing red eyes. Blood Fang wolves. One of them snarled and lunged toward a little boy who had become separated from his mother. "No!" Lena screamed. Before the wolf could reach him— A black blur crashed into it. Kai. He tackled the Blood Fang wolf across the street, sending both of them rolling into a fountain. The other two wolves turned toward him. Without hesitation, they attacked. Three wolves. One against two. Lena could only watch helplessly. "Kai..." Suddenly— A silver wolf burst from the shadows. It landed beside Kai and let out a deafening howl. The Blood Fang wolves hesitated. The silver wolf was smaller than Kai, but incredibly fast. Together, they forced the attackers backward. Lena stared in shock. That silver wolf... It looked familiar. The wolf glanced at her. Bright blue eyes. The same bright blue eyes... As Emma. "No way..." The silver wolf transformed into a human. Standing in the middle of the street was Emma. Her long red hair fell over her shoulders as she caught her breath. Lena's mouth fell open. "Emma?" Emma gave an awkward smile. "Surprise..." "You... you're a werewolf?" Emma rubbed the back of her neck. "I've been trying to tell you." "When?" "I never got the chance." Despite everything happening around them, Lena almost laughed. "You seriously hid this from me?" Emma grinned. "It's kind of a big secret." A loud growl interrupted them. Viktor stepped into the square in his human form. Tall. Broad-shouldered. A scar ran across his left eye. His crimson eyes glowed unnaturally in the moonlight. The crowd immediately fell silent. Kai moved protectively in front of Lena. "You shouldn't be here." Viktor smiled. "I came for the Moon Child." "You're leaving empty-handed." "We'll see." His gaze shifted to Lena. "You look just like your mother." Lena froze. "You... knew my mother?" "I did." "What happened to her?" For the first time... Viktor's smile disappeared. "She made a choice." "What choice?" "She chose love over destiny." Lena frowned. "I don't understand." "You will." Before Lena could ask another question— An arrow shot through the air. It struck the ground between Viktor and Kai. Everyone looked toward the rooftops. A hooded figure stood there with a bow in hand. Without a word, they fired another arrow. Viktor dodged it easily. "Still protecting them?" he sneered. The hooded stranger removed the hood. Lena gasped. It was the mysterious old man from the library. His long silver hair moved with the wind. His blue eyes burned with determination. "I warned you, Viktor." "You should have stayed buried in the past." The old man smiled faintly. "The past has a way of returning." The battle erupted again. Blood Fang wolves charged through the square. Moon Pack warriors answered with fierce howls. Kai transformed once more. Emma shifted beside him. Together they defended the townspeople. Lena wanted to help... But she was only human. Or so she thought. A frightened little girl cried from beneath a fallen cart. A Blood Fang wolf raced toward her. Without thinking— Lena ran. "No!" She threw herself between the wolf and the child. The wolf raised its claws. Then... A brilliant silver light exploded from Lena's body. The entire square fell silent. The wolf was hurled backward as if struck by an invisible force. The moon-shaped mark on Lena's wrist shone brighter than ever before. Silver energy surrounded her like a shield. Everyone stared. Even Viktor. "So..." He whispered with a smile. "The Moon Child's power has awakened." Lena looked down at her glowing hands. "I... I did that?" Kai transformed back into his human form. His golden eyes were filled with awe. "Lena..." Before anyone could move— The silver light suddenly vanished. Lena swayed. The world spun around her. Everything went black. She collapsed into Kai's arms. Kai caught her just before she hit the ground. "Lena!" She didn't answer. The mark on her wrist had gone dark again. Alden rushed over. "Take her to the pack house," he ordered. "Now." Kai lifted Lena gently into his arms. As he looked down at her peaceful face, one thought echoed through his mind. "I won't lose you." Hidden among the trees beyond the town, the cloaked figure watched everything. They slowly smiled. "The Moon Child has awakened..." "...exactly as the prophecy foretold."
