Chapter Three: Whispers in the Forest

837 Words
The silver pendant felt warm in Lena's palm. She stared at the tiny crescent moon engraved on it as she walked home, replaying everything that had happened in the forest. The giant wolf... Kai's glowing golden eyes... The way the wolf had obeyed him. None of it made sense. Yet somehow... It all felt real. "Lena?" Her father's voice snapped her back to reality as she stepped into the house. "There you are! I was worried." She forced a smile. "I took the shortcut through the woods." His face immediately darkened. "The forest?" She nodded. "You know, everyone keeps warning me about that place." Her father looked away for a moment before replying. "Just promise me you won't go there alone again." His unusually serious tone surprised her. "I promise." That night, after dinner, Lena sat on her bed, turning the pendant over in her hands. On the back... Tiny words were carved into the silver. "Bound by the moon..." "What does that mean?" She slipped the pendant into her pocket. Tomorrow, she would return it to Kai. The next morning, Moonridge High buzzed with its usual energy. Students laughed in the hallways, lockers slammed shut, and teachers hurried from classroom to classroom. Lena's eyes searched the crowd. Until... She found him. Kai stood alone beside his locker. Just as she started walking toward him— A blonde girl stepped in front of him. She was beautiful, confident, and clearly popular. She smiled brightly. "Morning, Kai." Kai barely glanced at her. "Morning." "I was wondering if you'd like to—" "I'm busy." Without another word, he walked away. The girl rolled her eyes. "Typical." Emma appeared beside Lena. "That's Olivia." "Who is she?" "The queen of Moonridge High." "And Kai just ignored her?" Emma laughed. "He ignores everyone." Lena smiled to herself. Everyone except me... During lunch, Lena finally spotted Kai sitting alone beneath a large oak tree behind the school. Taking a deep breath, she walked over. "Hey." Kai looked up. His expression changed the moment he saw her. "What are you doing here?" "I came to return this." She held out the silver pendant. His eyes widened. "You found it?" "It was lying on the ground after..." She hesitated. "...after yesterday." Kai quickly took the pendant, gripping it tightly. "Thank you." "What is it?" "It belongs to my family." "It looked important." "It is." Lena folded her arms. "So..." "So?" "Are you finally going to explain what happened yesterday?" Kai's jaw tightened. "I can't." "You won't." "I shouldn't." She sighed. "You saved my life." He looked away. "I only did what anyone would've done." "No." She shook her head. "You knew that wolf." Silence. "You weren't afraid of it." Still nothing. Finally... Kai stood up. "The less you know..." He looked directly into her eyes. "...the safer you'll be." Then he walked away. Again. Lena groaned. "Why does he always leave before answering anything?" That afternoon, curiosity got the better of her. Instead of going home, Lena visited the town library. It was old and quiet, filled with towering bookshelves and the scent of aged paper. An elderly librarian smiled warmly. "Can I help you?" "I'm looking for books about Moonridge." "History section." Minutes later... Lena found a dusty leather-bound book titled: The Legends of Moonridge. She flipped through its fragile pages. Most of the stories were harmless. Ghost tales. Old myths. Local folklore. Then... One chapter caught her attention. The Wolves of the Moon. Her heartbeat quickened. She began reading. "Long before Moonridge became a town, powerful wolf guardians protected these mountains. They lived among humans but hid their true forms beneath the light of the full moon." Lena's eyes widened. "Some called them monsters." "Others called them protectors." "To this day, no one knows whether the legends are true..." Suddenly— The lights inside the library flickered. A cold breeze swept through the room. The pages turned by themselves. Stopping on one illustration. A drawing of... A crescent moon pendant. Exactly like Kai's. Lena gasped. "Impossible..." "You shouldn't be reading that." Startled, she spun around. An old man stood behind her. His silver hair reached his shoulders, and his piercing blue eyes studied her carefully. "Who are you?" Instead of answering... He looked at the book. "Some secrets are buried for a reason." Before Lena could speak again... The old man turned and walked away. She hurried after him. "Wait!" She reached the library entrance. The street outside was empty. The old man had vanished. As if he had never been there. Lena clutched the old book tightly. "What is happening in this town?" Far away, hidden among the towering pines... A pair of glowing golden eyes watched the library. Kai. Beside him stood his grandfather. "She found the book," Kai said quietly. His grandfather nodded. "The truth is calling her." Kai's expression filled with worry. "And if she learns it too soon?" The old man looked toward the rising moon. "Then the prophecy will awaken... before either of you is ready."
