SARAH
I looked away from my parents and stared hard at Emily as she gave me a triumphant smile. I could feel the adrenaline rushing through my blood and I wanted nothing more than to rush at her and wipe that smile clean off her face with a series of slaps. A part of me wanted to turn around and walk away from this crazy scene but another part of me wanted to stay and ensure I had the last word in this fight. I stared Emily down as I weighed my options; I could either take the proverbial advice of running away and living to fight another day or I could stay now and fight and still fight another day. Besides, I badly wanted to know who had told my stupid b***h of a little sister about Bryan and I and I had no doubts that if I riled her up rightly, she would spill.
I opened my mouth to retort but she beat me to the punch.
"What's the matter Sarah?" She asked smugly. "Are you just going to stand there or are you going to open the little hole in your head and explain to your family why Bryan Jones is the father of your triplets and why he so boldly bragged about it to Kyle?" She asked. "I mean, if you were shameless enough to have been cheating on Kyle with his best friend the whole time you were with him, you could have as well told us, your family so we would help cover your dirty linen, don't you think?"
I knew she was taunting me with hopes that I'd attack her. The thing about me and Emily's fights was that we never got physical. As a matter of fact, until today I had always let her get away with cursing me out.
"As I said Emily, you're beneath me in every way, including morals and standards," I started and I could see her smile widen. "While your low morals may allow you to enable you to stoop low and do something as cheap as cheating on a man with his best friend or having s*x with your sister's fiance a night to her wedding," I paused and pointed at myself "My high virtues won't allow me. Sure, I had s*x with Bryan Jones on what was supposed to be my wedding night, but that only happened when I got wasted at a bar after finding out my little sister who should have been helping me plan a wedding, had been busy rolling in bed with my fiance."
I watched the smile fall completely off her face and this time it was replaced with fury.
"I don't owe you any explanation Emily, none at all. As a matter of fact, the only reason I even bothered to explain my drunken one night stand with Bryan is because of mum and dad who I owe lots of explanations and apologies,"
With that last part I turned to my mum and dad and saw that their initial surprise had been replaced with a bit of sadness which I knew was most likely there because they felt bad that they hadn't been there for me on that unfortunate night eight years ago. I gave them a small smile before turning my attention back to Emily who now looked completely pissed.
"I couldn't care less what you, Kyle and Bryan do with your lives but I do know that I owe you three nothing."
With that, I rose up to leave the table but I walked over to mum and dad first and planted kisses on their cheeks. Then , I headed to the door of the dining room where I paused with my hand on the door knob.
"One more thing Emily, whatever you do, for as long as you breathe, never ever make the mistake of insulting my kids again."
I walked out and headed straight to the living room where I pecked my precious little boys on the forehead before telling them it was time to leave.
As we walked out the door, something Emily said came back to me;
"Are you just going to stand there or are you going to open the little hole in your head and explain to your family why Bryan Jones is the father of your triplets and why he so boldly bragged about it to Kyle?"
My focus was on the last sentence: why he so boldly bragged about it to Kyle. So that was how she had found out huh? Bryan had told Kyle. Apparently Bryan didn't only lack the control to not plant his lips on the lips of females who didn't want them, he also lacked the control to keep those same damned lips shut.
I guess I'd just have to have a word with him and lecture him on the importance of keeping his stupid mouth shut. I paused in my stride and checked the time on my phone; it was some minutes past 6pm. I should be able to see Bryan today if I moved fast. I turned to Denzel who had also stopped in his tracks a few feet ahead of me and was watching me steadily.
"D, can you do me a huge favour?" I asked then went on. "Can you please take the boys with you back to your suite? There's something I must do."
I kissed all three of them again. "Mummy will be back with you shortly, alright? I love you."
I thanked Denzel before heading straight for the sleek black Porsche which I had rented on my arrival at Los Angeles. I dialed Bryan's number as I got into the car and settled in behind the wheels. He picked up almost immediately and I didn't waste time on pleasantries.
"Bryan, this is Sarah," I started. "Meet me at the park on 7th. I'll be there in the next fifteen minutes."
I hung up the call without waiting for a response and the next second, I was speeding across the highway.
I made it to the park with three minutes to spare and I got out of the car and took a brief walk around the park that had been a huge part of my life until I had run away from Los Angeles. I walked up to the tree which had provided a cocoon of sorts which I had used as my "thinking spot" for years and I noticed it hadn't changed much. It was tucked away in a corner and therefore wasn't easily noticed and I had loved that about it. I had my hand on its bark when I sensed a presence and realized I wasn't alone. I looked up to see Bryan standing just a few feet away from me and watching me skeptically and I jumped a little but quickly regained my calm.
"Sorry," he said "I didn't mean to startle you."
I folded my arms together as if putting up some physical walls he would know better than to cross, but I probably didn't need to do that because he seemed set on keeping his distance.
"I'll spare us both some useful time and get straight to it," I started. "I don't know exactly what you told Kyle, how you told him or why you even thought you had the right to go tell him and sincerely, I don't care either," I paused and studied his face. He looked tired and for a moment I considered suggesting we talk later but I thought better of it and went on.
"Get this Bryan, I need you, Kyle and Emily to stay the hell away from my kids. They're too pure to get dragged into some stupid drama by shallow people like you three."
I paused again and added "You may be their biological father, but I don't need a magical being to know they consider my manager, Denzel Kane more of a father and I'd rather keep it that way. You've stayed out of their lives since they were born so keep it that way."
Without another word I brushed past him and headed to my car and I was just a few feet away from it when I felt a hand on my shoulder.
