CHAPTER 3

NORA’S POV I woke up slowly, with my body still tingling from the night before, and for a moment I forgot where I was, but then the memories came flooding back: Lucian’s hands on my skin, his lips on my neck, his voice whispering that I was beautiful, that I was his. I reached for him instinctively, my hand searching the empty space beside me, but the bed was cold. My heart dropped and I quickly sat up to look around the room, but he was gone. Then I saw a piece of paper folded neatly on the pillow beside me. My hand trembled as I picked it up and unfolded it. “I had to leave. I could not stay without wanting to keep you forever, and I am not ready to let you go yet. I will come back for you. You are mine now, and I do not share what belongs to me, not even with the world. I will find you when the time is right. Wait for me, Nora. I will find you. — L” I read the words once, then twice, then a third time with my heart beating so hard I could barely breathe. He said he would come back. He said I was his and he said I should wait for him. I held the note tightly to my chest, not knowing what to do with the feelings swirling inside me. I did not even know his last name, yet somehow he had made me feel more alive on one night than I felt in three years. Eventually, I forced myself out of bed, got dressed, and left the hotel room. The walk home felt like a blur and I couldn’t concentrate on what I was doing. I held the note in my hand the entire time, reading it again and again, memorizing every word. When I finally reached my house, I took a deep breath and opened the door. Lily was already awake, and sitting at the kitchen table with her bag packed beside her. She looked up when I walked in and narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “Where were you last night?” She asked. I forced a smile on my face and tried to look calm. “I slept at Tessa’s house after we left the club.” Lily studied me carefully and tilted her head to the side. “You look different this morning,” she said slowly. “Something is different about you, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.” My heart pounded in my chest, but I kept my voice steady. “I am fine, Lily. I just didn’t get much sleep. Now come on, we are leaving for Nightcrest Pack in twenty minutes. Go get ready.” She shrugged and grabbed her bag. “Okay, Mom.” Then she walked to the door, but paused and looked back at me. “Are you sure you are okay?” “I am sure,” I smiled and said softly. “Go on.” She nodded and disappeared through the door. I waited until I hear her footsteps fade, then I rushed to my room, closed the door, and pulled out my phone. I failed Tessa’s number and she answered on the first ring. “Tell me everything!” She said, with so much excitement in her voice. I smiled despite myself and whispered to my phone. “His name is Lucian. He is twenty seven, and he is do handsome, Tessa. I can not even describe it.” “And?” She pressed. “The night was incredible,” I admitted, my cheeks growing warm by the second. “He made me feel like I was the only woman in the world, and he left a note this morning saying he will come back for me.” Tessa gasped. “Nora! That is amazing!” “I do not know what to feel,” I said shakily. “I have been broken for so long, and now I feel…lighter. Different.” “Hold onto that feeling,” she said firmly. “You deserve it, Nora. You deserve to be happy.” I smiled. “Thank you, Tessa.” “Now go,” she said. “Go to Nightcrest Pack and start your new life, and stop worrying. Everything is going to work out.” We said goodbye, and I hung up, feeling lighter than I had in years. And hour later, Lily and I arrived at the Nightcrest Pack palace grounds. The palace was huge, more beautiful than anything I had ever seen, with tall golden gates and guards standing at attention. Lily gasped beside me with her eyes opened wide. “Mom, look at this place!” she whispered, pulling my arm excitedly. “It is like a castle!” I smiled and squeezed her hand gently. “It is, isn’t it?” Greta came out to meet us, with her arms open wide and and her face glowing with a warm smile. She looked elegant and powerful, but her eyes were kind, and immediately, I felt my nervousness melt away. “Nora!” She called out, rushing towards me. “You are finally here!” She wrapped her arms around me and hugged me tightly like I was her own daughter. I hugged her back, breathing in the familiar scent of her perfume. “Greta, it is good to see you,” I said happily as I pulled back. She looked at me, her eyes studying my face. “Look at you,” she said softly. “You look happy. Something has changed.” I laughed nervously. “I don’t know about that.” She turned to Lily, and her smile widened. “And you must be Lily! Oh you are even more beautiful than your mother told me.” Lily blushed and smiled shyly. “Thank you, ma’am.” Greta laughed and waved her hand. “Ma’am? Please call me Greta. Come here let me look at you.” She pulled Lily into a warm hug, and I felt my heart swell with gratitude. Greta was the same as she had always been, warm and kind and generous. “Welcome to Nightcrest Pack,” Greta said happily as she stepped back and took both our hands. “Both of you. This is your home now.” She led us inside, and I looked around at the luxury and wealth that surrounds us. The palace was was everything I had imagined and more, but as I walked through the grand hallways, I felt a strange knot forming in my stomach. I told myself I had left my old life behind. I told myself I was safe But deep down, I knew I was carrying something with me, the memory of Lucian, the taste of his lips, and the sound of his voice saying I was his. I did not know that I had just walked into a fire I never saw coming.
