CHAPTER 4

LUCIAN’S POV The council chamber was silent except for the sound of my voice as I laid out the terms of the Treaty with the neighboring pack. I sat there at the head of the the long table, as my silver grey eyes scanned the faces of the officials gathered before me, and not a single person dared to interrupt or question my decision. “The border will remain open for trade,” I said in a calm but firm voice. “but any wolf crossing without permission will face banishment. No exceptions.” The pack officials exchanged glances, but no one argued. They had learned long ago that my word was final, and that challenging me was a waste of breath. I leaned back in my chair, with my broad shoulders filling the space, and waited for someone to speak. When no one did, I nodded. “Meeting adjourned.” The officials filed out of the room one by one, with their footsteps echoing against the stone floor. Jace lingered behind, as he always did, and waited until the door clicked shut before he spoke. “You were harsh on them today,” he said, falling into step beside me as we walked through the grand hallways of the palace. “The elders looked like they wanted to argue, but they were too scared to open their mouths.” “Good,” I replied softly, with a faint smile tugging at my lips. “They should be scared. Fear keeps them in line.” Jace chuckled. “You are impossible, you know that?” I did not answer, because my mind was elsewhere, drifting back to the night before to the woman who had occupied my thoughts since the moment I saw her. I had left her sleeping in my hotel room, her chestnut hair spread across my pillow and her lips curved up into a peaceful smile. The notr I had left her was a gamble, a claim I had no right to make, but I could not help myself. She was mine now. I had decided that the moment our eyes met across the crowded club. We reached my private chambers and Jace followed me inside, settling down on a chair while I poured myself a glass of whiskey. The room was large and luxurious, with tall buildings overlooking the palace grounds, and the warmth of the fire place made the space feel almost cozy. “I need you to find someone for me,” I said, turning to face my Beta. “At Snowrich Pack.” Jace raised an eyebrow in surprise. “Who?” “Her name is Nora. Mid thirties. Chest nut hair. Warm brown eyes. Curvy. Thick. A healer.” Jace stared at me in shock for a long moment, then he let out a low whistle. “Curvy? As in thick thick?” Then he laughed and shook his head. “I didn’t know you were into that kind of woman.” I smiled, and it was a rare genuine smile that softened the hard lines of my face. “I didn’t know either. But life can be surprising at times.” Jace leaned forward with obvious curiosity on his face. “Tell me more.” I set down my glass and walked to the window to stare out at the dark sky. “I have never been attracted to anyone, Jace. Not since I became Alpha. I thought something was wrong with me, I thought maybe I was broken, that I would never find my fated mate, and I would spend the rest of my life alone.” Then I turned to face him, with my silver gray eyes burning with intensity. “But last night, I saw her, and everything changed. She didn’t throw herself at me like other she- wolves do. She was shy, hesitant, like she didn’t believe she was beautiful. And the way her curves filled her dress, the softness of her body, the warmth in her eyes when she finally let me close…I couldn’t look away and I didn’t want to. She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen, and I knew in that moment that I had to have her.” Jace raised an eyebrow in surprise and asked, “So yku are telling me you are attracted to her because she didn’t throw herself at you?” “Partly,” I admitted. “But it is more than that. There is something about her, Jace. Something I can’t explain. When I touch her, when I held her, it felt right. Like I had been waiting my whole life to find her, and I did not even know it.” Jace nodded his head slowly. “I have never heard you talk about anyone like this before.” “Neither have I,” I said. “That is why I need you to find her for me.” Jace smiled. “Alright, lover boy, I will find her.” I was about to respond when a knock on the door interrupted us and an omega entered, bowing low. “Alpha,” he said, his voice trembling slightly, “the Luna Dowager sends a message. She is inviting you to dinner at the great hall tonight. She wishes to introduce you to her guests.” I frowned my face in surprise, because my mother rarely invited me to have dinner with her without telling me before hand. “Guests?” I repeated. “What guests?” The omega shook his head. “I don’t know, Alpha.” I narrowed my eyes. “Is an Alpha or a Luna?” “No, Alpha.” “A Lord or a Lady?” “No, Alpha.” He hesitated for a moment, then added, “It is a chubby lady named Nora and her daughter, Lily.” The glass in my hand stopped halfway to my lips, and for a moment, I could not move. Could not breathe as the name echoed in my head like a drumbeat. Nora. The woman from the club. The woman whose skin I had tasted, whose moans I had swallowed, whose name I had whispered into the dark like a prayer. She was here in my Pack, and at my mother’s invitation? I set the glass down slowly and smiled. “Tell my mother I will be there.” The omega bowed low and left the room. Jace turned to stare at me, with disbelief in his eyes. Then he shook his head, with a knowing smile playing on his lips and said, “You have got to be kidding me. Lucian, you are going to be playing with fire.” My smile only grew wider and I said softly, “I know, and I can’t wait.” Nora. My Nora. The woman I had left a note for this morning. The woman I had told to wait for me. She was here, in my pack. At my mother’s invitation. And she had no idea who I truly was. But tonight, everything would change.
