CHAPTER 10: THE NIGHT THEY TOOK The storm came like a warning the pack could not ignore. By late afternoon, the sky had darkened into a heavy gray, thick clouds rolling in like an approaching army. The air grew colder, sharper, and every wolf in Silver Claw felt it, the shift, the tension, the silent threat pressing down on the territory. I stood near the training grounds, my muscles still aching from hours of relentless drills, my senses stretched thin but alert. Something was wrong. Not just the storm, not just the unease crawling through the pack, but something deeper. My wolf stirred restlessly beneath my skin, her voice low and certain. They are close. A chill slid down my spine, and I scanned the area instinctively, my eyes searching for something I couldn’t yet see. Warriors moved with urgency now, reinforcing the borders, checking weapons, strengthening patrol lines. No one laughed. No one relaxed. Even those who tried to appear calm carried tension in every step. Across the courtyard, Kael stood near the main gate, speaking in low tones with his Beta, his posture rigid, his expression unreadable but sharp with focus. He looked like a king preparing for war, every inch of him radiating control and power. As if sensing my gaze, he turned slightly, his eyes finding mine through the distance. For a moment, the noise around us faded. He gave a small nod, barely noticeable, but enough. Stay ready. I nodded back, my chest tightening with something I refused to name. The first drop of rain hit the ground softly, almost unnoticed. Then another. And another. Within seconds, the sky opened, and heavy rain poured down across the territory, drenching everything in cold sheets. The sound filled the air, masking footsteps, dulling senses, turning the ground into slick mud. It was the perfect cover. My instincts screamed louder. My wolf’s voice rose again, sharper this time. Now. My head snapped toward the eastern side of the territory. At first, there was nothing, just rain and shadows. Then I saw it. Movement. Fast. Silent. Too precise to be anything else. “Kael!” I shouted, my voice cutting through the storm. He reacted instantly. “Positions!” his voice roared across the territory, powerful and commanding. “They’re here!” Chaos erupted in seconds. The Shadow Pack didn’t storm the gates, they slipped through like ghosts, scaling walls, exploiting blind spots, using the storm to hide their movements. By the time the first howl echoed through the air, they were already inside. Wolves shifted mid-run, bones cracking, fur bursting through skin as warriors launched into battle. Lightning split the sky, illuminating the battlefield in flashes, revealing glimpses of dark wolves moving with terrifying precision. This wasn’t a reckless attack. It was controlled. Organized. Intentional. I didn’t hesitate. I shifted. The transformation surged through me, faster than ever before, power flooding my veins as my silver wolf emerged. The moment my paws hit the ground, everything sharpened. Sounds became clearer, movements slower, scents stronger. I could track everything. A Shadow wolf lunged toward one of the healers near the edge of the courtyard. I intercepted it without thinking, slamming into its side and sending it crashing into the mud. It recovered instantly, its glowing red eyes locking onto mine, not with surprise, but recognition. My wolf growled low. They came for us. More of them began to gather. At first, it seemed like coincidence, random movement in battle. But then I felt it. The shift. The pattern. They weren’t attacking the strongest warriors. They weren’t targeting the gates. They were closing in, on me. My heart pounded harder, but I didn’t step back. “Lira!” Kael’s voice echoed in my mind as he tore through two Shadow wolves, moving toward me with brutal force. “Stay behind me!” But I couldn’t. If I retreated, they would follow, and more of the pack would fall. So instead, I stepped forward, my claws digging into the mud. The first wolf lunged. I met it head-on, our bodies colliding violently. I twisted, struck, forced it back, barely dodging the next attack that came from my left. They were fast. Strong. But so was I now. Stronger than before. My movements became instinctive, guided by my wolf rather than hesitation. I struck again, pushing one back, turning to block another, but there were too many. Five. Six. Maybe more. They circled tighter, not rushing, not panicking. Hunting. Then everything shifted. He stepped out from the darkness like he had always been there, his presence cutting through the chaos. Larger than the others, his wolf form was something unnatural, his black fur blending with the storm itself. His eyes glowed deep crimson, locking onto me with a focus that made the world seem to still. Even the other Shadow wolves hesitated slightly, creating space for him. Alpha, my wolf whispered, but something about him felt far beyond that. He shifted slowly into human form, rain sliding down his dark hair and broad shoulders as he moved toward me with calm, deliberate steps. “So,” he said, his voice smooth but cold, carrying easily despite the storm. “You are the one.” I shifted back into human form without thinking, my breathing uneven but steady as I faced him. “Who are you?” I demanded. A faint smile touched his lips, something unreadable flickering in his eyes. “You don’t know?” he replied softly. “That’s disappointing.” His gaze darkened slightly as he studied me. “I expected more.” Kael appeared beside me instantly, his presence like a shield. “You shouldn’t be here,” he said, his voice low and dangerous. The man’s smile didn’t fade. “And yet, here I am.” His gaze flicked briefly to Kael before returning to me. “This doesn’t concern you, Alpha.” Kael’s jaw tightened. “Anything that threatens my pack concerns me.” The man tilted his head slightly, amusement flickering across his face. “Your pack?” he repeated. Then his voice dropped, colder, sharper. “She doesn’t belong to you.” A growl tore from Kael’s chest. “She belongs to no one.” The man’s smile deepened. “We’ll see.” Before anyone could react, he moved, faster than anything I had ever seen. One moment he stood still, the next he was in front of me. Kael lunged, but the man struck first, a powerful blow sending Kael crashing back through the mud. My heart lurched. I barely had time to react before his hand closed around my arm, his grip unyielding. Panic surged, but my wolf rose instantly. Fight. Power exploded through me, stronger, hotter, brighter than before. I twisted sharply, forcing energy into my movement, breaking his hold just enough to pull free. For a split second, surprise flickered in his eyes. Then it was gone. “You don’t understand what you are yet,” he said quietly, stepping closer again. “But you will.” I steadied myself, my gaze locked onto his. “I’m not going with you,” I said firmly. His expression shifted, not anger, not frustration, but something far more unsettling. Interest. “Good,” he murmured softly. “Because this is more fun.” A sharp whistle cut through the storm. And everything exploded. The Shadow wolves surged forward all at once, not toward the pack, but toward me. I shifted instantly, barely managing to block the first strike as claws tore through the air. They moved faster now, more aggressive, more focused. This wasn’t random. It wasn’t chaos. It was coordinated. A test. Kael fought his way back toward me, tearing through enemies with brutal force. “Get her out of here!” he shouted, but no one could reach me. The circle had already closed. The man stepped back, watching. Observing. Waiting. Lightning cracked across the sky again, illuminating the battlefield, and in that moment, the truth hit me. This wasn’t just an attack. It was a test. And I was the one being tested. My wolf surged forward, stronger than ever before, her voice rising with power and certainty. Then we show them. The energy inside me erupted, spreading through my body like fire, like light, like something ancient finally waking. I felt it, my strength, my speed, my control, all expanding beyond what I thought possible. And as the Shadow wolves lunged again, I didn’t hesitate. I attacked. And the battlefield changed.
