CHAPTER 15: THE FIRST TRIAL
The moment the symbols beneath my feet ignited, the world shifted in a way I couldn’t explain. It wasn’t just the light or the surge of energy, it was everything. The forest around me seemed to fade, the sounds dulling until all I could hear was the steady, powerful rhythm of my own heartbeat. The air thickened, charged with something ancient, something that recognized me in a way no one else ever had. My wolf surged forward, no longer just a presence within me but something fully aligned with every part of who I was. “This is it,” she whispered, her voice steady, almost reverent.
The light expanded outward, forming a wide circle around me, the glowing symbols stretching across the ground like a living pattern. Each marking pulsed faintly, reacting to my presence, to my blood, to something deeper than I could fully understand. My body felt both heavy and weightless at the same time, like I was being held in place by something invisible yet powerful. I tried to step back, to test it, but my feet wouldn’t move. Not because I was trapped, but because I knew instinctively that I wasn’t meant to leave.
“Lira!” Kael’s voice cut through the air, sharp and urgent. I turned my head slightly, but the moment I did, the space between us seemed… wrong. Distorted. Like he was farther away than he should be, separated from me by something unseen. I could see him clearly, his expression tense, his body poised to move forward, but he didn’t step into the circle. He couldn’t. Something was holding him back. Not physically, but instinctively. Even Selena had stopped, her sharp gaze fixed on the glowing ground, her body rigid with caution.
“What is this?” she muttered under her breath.
“A boundary,” one of the warriors said quietly. “Ancient magic.”
Kael’s jaw tightened. “Lira, can you hear me?” he called again, his voice steadier now, controlled despite the tension. I nodded slightly. “Yeah,” I answered, though my voice sounded distant, even to me. “I’m fine.” But even as I said it, I knew that wasn’t entirely true. Because whatever was happening… it wasn’t normal.
The light surged again, Stronger, Brighter, And then, Everything went dark.
Not the kind of darkness that comes from closing your eyes, but something deeper. Something that swallowed everything, the forest, the clearing, the others, until there was nothing left but me. I stood there alone, the ground beneath me solid but unfamiliar, the air around me still and silent.
Then, slowly, The darkness shifted, Shapes began to form.
Faint at first, like shadows moving at the edge of vision. Then clearer. Figures. Wolves. Dozens of them. Maybe more. They stood at a distance, their forms flickering slightly as if they weren’t entirely real. Their eyes glowed faintly, watching me with an intensity that made my chest tighten.
My wolf didn’t growl, She didn’t warn me, Instead, she stood still.
They are not enemies, she said quietly.
“Then what are they?” I whispered
Before she could answer, One of the figures stepped forward, Larger than the others.
His form solidified as he moved closer, his silver fur catching a light that didn’t seem to come from anywhere. His eyes, bright, piercing, ancient, locked onto mine with a familiarity that sent a strange jolt through me.
“You’ve come at last,” he said, His voice didn’t echo around me, It echoed inside me.
I stiffened slightly. “Who are you?” I asked.
A faint smile touched his expression, though there was no warmth in it, only understanding.
“I am what you were,” he said. “And what you will become.”
My breath caught,That didn’t make sense, But somehow…It did.
“You’re part of this bloodline,” I said slowly.
He inclined his head slightly. “One of many who came before you,” he confirmed. “And one of many who failed.”
The word hit harder than I expected, “Failed?” I repeated.
His gaze didn’t soften. “Power like yours is not given freely,” he said. “It must be earned. Controlled. Survived.” He took another step closer, his presence growing heavier with each movement. “Tell me, child of Sovereign blood… do you believe you are strong enough?”
The question wasn’t simple, It wasn’t just about strength, It was about everything, And for a moment, I hesitated, Not because I didn’t want to answer, But because I understood what he was really asking.
Do I believe in myself?
My wolf stirred, her presence stead
I lifted my head slightly, meeting his gaze without backing down.
“Yes,” I said.
His eyes narrowed slightly, studying me.
Then, Without warning, He attacked.
The shift was instant. One moment he stood still, the next he was in front of me, moving faster than anything I had ever faced before. I barely had time to react before his strike hit, forcing me backward. Pain flared, sharp and sudden, but I didn’t fall. I recovered quickly, my instincts kicking in as I shifted mid-motion, my silver wolf emerging without hesitation.
He didn’t slow down, He didn’t hold back, Neither did I.
We collided again, claws striking, teeth snapping, our movements blurring together as we fought. He was stronger than anything I had faced before. Faster. More precise. Every attack was calculated, every movement controlled. He wasn’t trying to overwhelm me with brute force, he was testing me, pushing me, breaking me.
I dodged one strike, countered another, but it wasn’t enough. He landed a hit that sent me skidding across the ground, pain shooting through my side. I forced myself back up instantly, shaking it off, refusing to stay down.
Focus, my wolf urged.
I exhaled sharply, centering myself, letting go of the hesitation that still lingered. I stopped reacting.
And started predicting, The next time he moved, I was ready.
I shifted slightly, adjusting my stance, watching his movements more carefully. He lunged, I stepped to the side, avoiding the full impact, striking back with more precision than before. He blocked it, but I didn’t stop. I followed through, pushing harder, faster, forcing him to adjust.
For the first time, He stepped back, Not much, But enough.
A flicker of approval crossed his expression.
“There it is,” he said quietly.
But the fight wasn’t over, Not even close.
He moved again, faster this time, stronger, pushing me beyond what I thought I could handle. My body ached, my muscles screamed, but I didn’t stop. I couldn’t. Because something inside me had changed.
I wasn’t just fighting to survive, I was fighting to prove something to him,To myself.
To the power inside me that refused to be ignored.
The energy surged again, stronger with each movement, flowing through me, amplifying everything, my speed, my strength, my control. I could feel it now, clearer than ever before.
This wasn’t something separate from me, It was me.
And the moment I fully accepted that, Everything clicked, My movements sharpened, My reactions became instinctive, My strength doubled.
He lunged again, And this time, I met him head-on.
The impact sent a shockwave through the space around us, energy rippling outward as our power collided. For a moment, everything froze, locked in place between us.
Then, he smiled, Not cold, Not distant, But proud.
And just like that, he stepped back, The fight ended.
The space around us shifted again, the other figures watching silently as the light began to return. My breathing was heavy, my body aching, but I remained standing.
I hadn’t fallen, I hadn’t failed.
“You’ve passed the first trial,” he said.
Relief didn’t come, Because something in his tone told me,This was only the beginning.
“The next trial,” he continued, his gaze sharpening slightly, “will not test your strength.”
A chill ran down my spine.
“It will test your mind.” The light surged again.
The world shifted, And before I could react, Everything disappeared once more.
