CHAPTER 13: THE BLOOD THAT COMMANDS
The silence that followed Elder Varis’s revelation didn’t feel empty, it felt heavy, like the air itself had thickened with the weight of truth. I stood where I was, his words echoing in my mind, repeating over and over until they no longer sounded impossible… just inevitable. A bloodline that creates or destroys Alphas. Hunted. Hidden. Feared. My chest rose and fell slowly, but inside, everything was shifting. Pieces of my life that had never made sense suddenly began to fall into place, the way I had always felt different, the way my wolf had taken longer to awaken, the way the power inside me had exploded the moment I stopped holding it back. It hadn’t been weakness. It had been restraint. My wolf stirred, her presence calm and steady now, no longer uncertain. You were never meant to be small, she said. And for the first time, I believed her.
Kael hadn’t moved far, but I could feel his attention on me, sharp and unyielding. He was watching, not just as an Alpha protecting his pack, but as something else entirely. Something more personal. “If what you’re saying is true,” he said slowly, his voice measured as he turned to Elder Varis, “then she’s not just a target. She’s a threat.” The word hung in the air, but it didn’t sting the way it might have before. Because it wasn’t wrong. Elder Varis nodded slightly. “To the wrong people, yes,” he replied. “But to the right ones… she’s a turning point.” Selena shifted slightly near the door, her arms still crossed, her expression thoughtful now rather than hostile. “And which are we?” she asked quietly. Varis’s gaze flicked to her briefly before returning to me. “That,” he said, “depends on what she becomes.”
I swallowed slowly, stepping forward before I could second-guess myself. “Then tell me everything,” I said, my voice steady despite the storm still raging outside. “No more half-truths. No more secrets.” My gaze locked onto Elder Varis, refusing to look away. “If they’re coming for me, I deserve to know why.” The old man studied me for a long moment, as if measuring something deeper than my words. Then, slowly, he nodded. “Very well,” he said. “But understand this, once you know the truth, there is no going back to the life you had before.” A faint, bitter smile touched my lips. “That life ended the moment I was rejected,” I said quietly. “There’s nothing to go back to.”
Something flickered in Kael’s expression at that, something brief and unreadable, but it was gone before I could fully understand it. Elder Varis began to walk slowly across the room as he spoke, his voice low but clear. “Your bloodline is older than any pack currently standing,” he said. “Before the structure of Alphas, Betas, and ranked hierarchies, there were wolves who led not through dominance, but through power alone. They were rare, born with an innate connection to the core of what we are. Not just wolves… but something closer to the origin of the species itself.” My heart beat faster as I listened, every word pulling me deeper into something I couldn’t ignore.
“They were called the Sovereign Wolves,” he continued. “Not because they claimed kingdoms, but because they didn’t need to. Their presence alone commanded loyalty, submission, even fear. Alphas bowed to them, not out of duty, but instinct.” Selena frowned slightly. “That sounds like a myth,” she said. Varis didn’t look at her. “Most myths are based on truth,” he replied calmly. Then his gaze returned to me. “And you carry that truth in your blood.”
I exhaled slowly, trying to steady the storm building inside me. “If they were so powerful… what happened to them?” I asked. Varis’s expression darkened. “They became a threat,” he said simply. “Not just to rival packs, but to the balance of power itself. No Alpha could truly rule while they existed. So they were hunted. Betrayed. Slaughtered.” His voice grew quieter. “Some were killed in battle. Others were turned on by those they trusted. And eventually… they were erased.” A heavy silence followed his words, broken only by the distant sound of thunder.
“But not all of them,” Kael said quietly.
Varis nodded once. “No,” he agreed. “Not all.” His gaze held mine again, sharper now. “One survived. Hidden. Protected. Passed down through generations in secret until…” He paused slightly. “Until you.” My throat tightened, but I didn’t look away. “So that’s why he came for me,” I said. “That’s why they’re watching.” “Yes,” Varis confirmed. “Because if you awaken fully, you won’t just challenge Alphas, you’ll surpass them.” Selena let out a quiet breath. “And if she doesn’t?” she asked. Varis’s expression didn’t soften. “Then she’ll die,” he said. “Because they won’t allow something like her to exist without control.”
The words settled heavily over the room, but instead of fear, something else began to rise inside me. Determination. If my existence alone was enough to threaten them, then hiding would only delay the inevitable. Running would only make me weaker. My wolf stirred again, stronger now, her presence almost… proud. We are not prey, she said firmly. I straightened slightly, meeting Varis’s gaze without hesitation. “Then I won’t stay incomplete,” I said. “If this power is mine, I’m going to learn how to use it.”
Kael stepped closer then, his presence steady and grounding. “You don’t even know what you’re asking,” he said quietly. I turned to him, my expression firm. “Then teach me,” I replied. “Or find someone who can.” His jaw tightened slightly, conflict flashing briefly in his eyes. “This isn’t like training a normal wolf,” he said. “If something goes wrong, ” “It already has,” I interrupted. “They’ve already found me. Waiting won’t change that.” The truth in my words hung between us, undeniable.
For a long moment, Kael said nothing. Then, slowly, he nodded. “Fine,” he said. “But you don’t do this alone.” My chest tightened slightly, but I didn’t argue. Because deep down, I knew he was right. Elder Varis watched the exchange with quiet approval. “There is one place,” he said finally, drawing our attention back to him. “An old ground, far beyond the borders of this pack. It’s where your kind once trained, where their power was first understood.” My heart skipped slightly. “And it still exists?” I asked. Varis nodded. “Hidden,” he said. “Protected. But dangerous. Not just because of what’s there… but because of what it will demand from you.”
Selena shifted again, her expression sharpening. “And you think she’s ready for that?” she asked. Varis’s gaze returned to me once more, steady and unwavering. “No,” he said honestly. “But she will be.” A strange calm settled over me at that, replacing the last traces of doubt. I didn’t know what waited at that place. I didn’t know what it would take from me. But I knew one thing with absolute certainty, This was my path.
The storm outside rumbled again, thunder echoing across the territory as if the world itself was reacting to the choice being made. I stepped forward, my voice quiet but resolute. “Then we go,” I said.
And this time, No one tried to stop me.
