CHAPTER 22: The First Wave

1118 Words
"They came like shadows in the night, their howls splitting the silence. But they didn't know who they were facing. They didn't know we were ready." The howls grew louder, closer. I stood at the front of the pack, Kael on my right, Finn on my left. The darkness stretched before us, thick and suffocating, broken only by the faint glow of the moon. The air was cold, heavy with the promise of violence. Every breath I took felt like a battle in itself. Behind me, I could feel the pack's fear—a living thing that pulsed through the clearing like a second heartbeat. But beneath the fear, there was something else. Determination. Loyalty. The will to protect what was theirs. I thought of everything we'd built together. The late nights spent training, the quiet moments of trust, the bonds that had formed between wolves who had once been strangers. They weren't just my pack anymore—they were my family. And I would die before I let anyone take them from me. And then I saw them. Figures emerged from the treeline—dozens of them, their eyes gleaming with hunger and malice. They moved like a single entity, a wave of fur and fangs driven by a single purpose. Destruction. I heard the sharp intake of breath from the wolves beside me. I heard the soft whimper of a younger wolf, barely more than a pup, trying to be brave. I felt Kael's presence beside me, steady and unyielding. "Hold the line," I commanded, my voice steady despite the fear coiling in my chest. "They come to us. We don't go to them." The pack braced themselves. I heard the soft whisper of blades being drawn, the low growls of wolves preparing to shift. I saw Eira's small hands glowing with healing light, ready to save anyone who fell. I saw Tamsin's sharp eyes scanning the enemy, counting, assessing. The rogues charged. The first wave hit like a tidal wave. The world dissolved into chaos. The metallic tang of blood filled the air, mixing with the scent of fear and sweat. I heard the sickening crunch of bone, the yelp of a wolf as he fell. Claws raked across my flank, and I felt the sting of pain but I didn't stop. I couldn't. I shifted into my wolf form, my senses sharpening as the battle erupted around me. The world became a blur of teeth and claws, of growls and screams. I felt Ember surge through me, her power flowing through my veins like liquid fire. She was ancient and fierce, a wolf who had waited lifetimes for this moment. We fight together, she said. As one. I felt her strength amplify mine, felt the bond between us deepen with every strike. I was not just a wolf I was a weapon. I was a Luna. I lunged at the first rogue, my jaws finding his throat. He fell, and I moved to the next. Left flank, I commanded, pushing the thought toward Finn. Protect the healers. I saw him nod, his movements fluid and deadly. He was a whirlwind of fury, cutting through the enemy with a precision that made me proud. I saw Kael take down three rogues in a single breath. He moved like water—fluid, relentless, unstoppable. His silver fur was slick with blood, his eyes blazing with a fury I'd never seen. He was protecting us. Protecting me. You're not alone, I heard his voice echo in my mind. I'm right here. I surged forward, tackling a rogue to the ground. But even as I fought, I was watching counting, assessing, directing. Finn, cover the left flank. Tamsin, protect the healers. Rourke, hold the center. I was not just a warrior. I was their leader. A rogue lunged at Eira. I saw her small form freeze, her hands raised in defense. She was a healer, not a fighter but she didn't run. I reached her in time, my jaws closing around the rogue's throat. He fell, and I stood between them, my growl low and dangerous. I saw Varen—the young wolf who had trained so hard—holding his ground, his small body trembling but his stance unyielding. I saw Orin fighting like a wolf possessed, his face set with determination. Hold the line! I commanded. The pack responded as one. Tamsin was a blade, cutting through the enemy with surgical precision. Rourke was a wall, his silent strength protecting those behind him. I saw Kael fighting like a demon, his silver fur stained red. I saw Finn's face pale beneath the blood, his gaze locked on the enemy. And I saw the rogues falter. I heard their thoughts before I saw them. ...he's a monster... we have to follow him... there's no escape... ...Damon will kill us if we run... ...I didn't sign up for this... The rogues were afraid. They followed Damon because they had no choice—because the alternative was worse. They're not fighting for him, I realized. They're fighting because they're afraid. I surged forward, tackling a rogue to the ground. I pinned him, my jaws hovering over his throat. Stop, I said, pushing the thought into his mind. Stop fighting for him. He doesn't care about you. The rogue's eyes widened with shock, his body trembling beneath me. He understood. I released him and moved to the next. He's using you. He doesn't care if you live or die. One by one, the rogues faltered. Their resolve crumbled. They had come here seeking power but what they found was not a weak pack led by a weak Luna. What they found was a family that refused to break. The rogues retreated. I stood in the middle of the battlefield, my chest heaving, my fur matted with blood. Around me, the pack was tending to the wounded binding gashes, counting the fallen. I saw Orin clutching his arm, blood seeping through his fingers. I saw Varen, pale and shaking, but alive. I saw Eira already at work, her healing light glowing softly. I saw Finn, his eyes meeting mine, the same thought echoing between us: This was just the beginning. I pressed a paw to the wound on my flank. The pain was sharp, but I pushed it aside. "It's not over," I said, my voice raw. "This was just the first wave." Finn stepped forward, his face pale but determined. "Then we'll be ready." I turned to face the darkness, feeling the weight of the battle ahead. We had won this fight but the war was far from over. And I would lead my pack through it. No matter what.
