CHAPTER 3: The Breaking

2085 Words
"They thought they were breaking me. But they were only shattering the cage I'd been living in. And when the dust settled, I was free." The morning of my rejection dawned grey and heavy. I'd barely slept, my body aching with exhaustion that no amount of rest could cure. I'd spent the night staring at the ceiling, replaying every cruel word I'd overheard, every moment that had led me to this precipice. I rose before dawn and dressed in my simplest clothes—a worn grey dress and a threadbare shawl that had once belonged to my grandmother. I didn't bother with my hair. What was the point? No one would see me. No one ever did. The house was quiet. Damon was already gone—off to prepare for the pack meeting. Lila had spent the night in his study, and I'd heard their soft laughter through the walls, their whispered endearments that cut deeper than any blade. I made breakfast for Liam, my hands moving on autopilot. The pup sat at the table, his dark eyes watching me with that unsettling perceptiveness children possess. "Auntie Raven," he said softly. "Are you sad?" I forced a smile. "No, sweetheart. I'm just tired." He frowned. "You always say that." "Because it's always true." I ruffled his hair and set his bowl of porridge in front of him. "Eat up. You have lessons with the elders today." He nodded, but his gaze followed me as I moved around the kitchen, pretending everything was normal. Normal. What a joke. The pack meeting was called for midday. Every wolf in the Blackwood Pack was expected to attend. I knew what was coming. I'd known for months. Lila found me in the garden, where I'd gone to hide among the wilted roses. Her footsteps were soft on the grass, her voice a breathless whisper of false concern. "Raven? Are you all right? You look so pale." I didn't turn to face her. "What do you want, Lila?" She moved to stand beside me, wearing a soft pink gown that made her look like a spring flower. Her golden hair was perfectly coiffed, her cheeks flushed with health. "I wanted to make sure you were ready," she said, her voice gentle and kind. "The pack meeting is in an hour. Damon is going to—" "I know what Damon is going to do." "Raven..." She sighed, a delicate sound of pity. "I never meant for it to come to this. You're my best friend." I finally looked at her. Her blue eyes were wide and sincere, the picture of innocence. But I'd seen the cruelty behind those eyes. "You're not my friend," I said quietly. "You stopped being my friend the moment you decided to take everything I had." Lila's expression flickered. The mask slipped, revealing the cold calculation beneath. "You had everything," she said, her voice losing its softness. "The Alpha's daughter. The perfect life. A mate who was destined to be Alpha. Do you know what it was like, watching you? Growing up in the shadow of your perfection?" "I never asked to be perfect." "Neither did I!" Her voice was sharp. "I grew up in a hovel while you had silk gowns and a warm bed. And the Moon Goddess gave you the mate I'd dreamed about since I was a pup? It wasn't fair." "So you stole him." "I took what was owed to me." Her smile was cold, brittle. "You were too weak to keep him. Too weak to be a Luna. Too weak to even be a real wolf." She stepped closer, her eyes glittering with malice. "Maybe the Moon Goddess knew what she was doing. Maybe she never meant for you to have anything. Maybe she just wanted to raise you up so I could watch you fall." "All those years," I whispered. "All those promises. They were all lies?" "Every single one." She smiled, sweet and poisonous. "And you believed every word. You were so easy to fool, Raven. So desperate to be loved. It was almost pathetic." I should have been angry. I should have screamed, attacked, raged. Instead, I just felt empty. "Enjoy your victory," I said, turning away. "I hope it was worth it." "Oh, it was." Her voice followed me. "It absolutely was." The Great Hall was packed. Wolves filled every seat, their eyes turning toward me as I entered. The whispers started immediately. "There she is." "The wolf-less one." "Did you hear? Damon's going to reject her today." I walked through the crowd, my head held high, my face a mask of calm. I kept my eyes straight ahead, refusing to meet anyone's gaze. I could feel their stares on my skin, their judgment burning through me. At the front of the hall, Damon stood on the raised dais. He was dressed in formal Alpha attire, his blonde hair gleaming in the firelight. Lila was seated beside him, her place of honor a clear statement of her status. Damon's eyes found mine across the crowded hall. I saw the barest flicker of something—remorse? Regret? Then his expression hardened, and I knew. There was no going back. "Pack members of Blackwood," Damon's voice boomed through the hall, silencing the chatter. "I have gathered you here today to make an announcement of great importance." The crowd fell silent. "As you all know, I have been mated to Raven Blackwood for three years. She is a woman of kindness and grace." I closed my eyes, bracing myself. "However, it has become clear that our bond is not meant to be. We are not compatible in the ways that matter. The Moon Goddess has not blessed our union." A murmur rippled through the crowd. "Therefore, I am formally rejecting Raven as my mate. She will no longer have any claim to the title of Luna. She will no longer be protected by this pack." The words hit me like a physical blow, even though I'd been expecting them. Damon raised his hand, and the pack fell silent again. "From this moment onward, I claim Lila Hart as my true Luna. She has been my companion, my confidante, my support through the darkest times." Lila rose, her eyes glistening with tears of joy. She walked to Damon's side, her hand in his. "Raven," Damon said, his voice cold and final. "I reject you as my mate. I reject you as my partner. I reject you as a member of this pack. You are banished from Blackwood territory, effective immediately." Silence. A thousand eyes turned to me, waiting for me to crumble. I stood frozen, my heart pounding, my chest hollow. But then something shifted deep inside me. A spark in the darkness. A whisper I'd never heard before. No. I lifted my head and met Damon's gaze. I didn't cry. I didn't beg. I didn't scream. I smiled. "Thank you," I said, my voice clear and steady. "Thank you for finally telling me the truth." Damon's eyes widened. "Raven—" "You've been lying to me for years," I continued, my voice carrying through the hall. "Making me feel worthless. Making me believe I was broken. But I see the truth now." I turned to face the pack. "You're all so quick to judge. So quick to whisper and point fingers. But you don't know anything about me. You saw a wolf-less girl and assumed she was worthless." The pack members shifted uncomfortably. "The Moon Goddess gave me to Damon as a mate. And he threw me away like garbage. He chose a woman who was supposed to be my sister, and she helped him destroy me." Lila's face was pale, her lips pressed into a thin line. "I hope your victory tastes sweet," I said to her. "Because I promise you, Lila, the day will come when you realize that this was never about love. It was about cruelty. And cruelty always comes back around." Lila flinched, taking a step back. Damon's jaw tightened. "That's enough, Raven. You need to leave. Now." "Gladly." I turned and began walking toward the entrance. The crowd parted before me, their eyes wide, their whispers silenced. Before I reached the door, I stopped. "Damon," I said, not turning around. "You broke our mate bond today. But you didn't break me. You never could." I looked back over my shoulder, my eyes locking with his. "One day, you're going to regret this. And when that day comes, I won't be here to save you." I walked out of the Great Hall, out of the pack lands, and into the unknown. The forest welcomed me like a long-lost friend. I walked for hours, my feet carrying me deeper into the wilderness. The trees formed a canopy that blocked out the grey sky. The air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth. The mate bond was shattered—I could feel it. The phantom pull that had once connected me to Damon was gone, replaced by a hollow ache. I stumbled into a small clearing, my legs finally giving out. I collapsed onto the moss-covered ground, my body trembling, my breath coming in ragged gasps. And then, for the first time in years, I cried. Great, heaving sobs that tore through my chest. I cried for the mate I'd lost. I cried for the friend I'd trusted. I cried for the years I'd wasted trying to be enough for people who would never see my worth. I cried until I had nothing left. Then I lay in the dirt, staring up at the branches above me, and waited to die. "Wake up." The voice was soft, like a whisper on the wind. Who's there? I thought, too exhausted to speak. "Wake up, little one. You're not done yet." I have nothing left. I'm empty. I'm nothing. "You've never been nothing. You've just been sleeping. Now it's time to wake up." I felt a warmth spread through my chest, a gentle heat that pushed back the cold emptiness. It grew stronger with every breath. Who are you? I asked. "I am who you've always been waiting for. I am your other half. And I've been waiting so long to meet you." The warmth exploded through me, a fire that burned away the grief, the pain, the emptiness. I gasped, my body arching off the ground. And then I heard it. A howl. Not in the distance—inside me. A wolf's howl, ancient and powerful, surging through my blood like a tidal wave. I opened my eyes. And for the first time in my life, I saw my wolf. She was magnificent. Massive and black as midnight, with fur that shimmered silver in the moonlight. Her eyes were gold—burning, ancient gold—and they gazed at me with fierce love. Hello, Raven. I stared at her. "Who... who are you?" I am Ember. And I've been waiting for you to find me. "Ember." The name felt familiar. "How... how are you here? I was born wolf-less. Everyone said—" Everyone was wrong. She stepped closer, her massive head nudging my chest. I was always here. Sleeping. Waiting. The Moon Goddess made sure I would only awaken when you were truly ready. I reached up, my trembling fingers brushing her fur. It was soft, warm, alive. "You knew this would happen? You knew I'd suffer?" I knew you'd need to break before you could become who you're meant to be. Her golden eyes softened. The Moon Goddess had a plan for you, Raven. A grand, beautiful plan. But first, you had to lose everything. I started to cry again, but these tears were different. Tears of relief, of joy, of hope. "You're real," I sobbed. "You're actually real." I'm real. She pressed her head against mine, her warmth seeping into my bones. And I'll never leave you. You're mine, Raven. And I am yours. I closed my eyes, feeling the bond between us—a bond stronger than any mate bond, deeper than any pack loyalty. The bond between a wolf and her human. I was whole. For the first time in my life, I was whole. I didn't shift that night. I was too exhausted, too overwhelmed. But I felt Ember's presence like a gentle fire in my chest, a constant companion who would never abandon me. I'd lost everything. But I'd found myself. And that made all the difference.
