Chapter Two

The mixer whirred in front of me, the icing for the cinnamon rolls nearly ready. I added a dash of maple extract, then a tad bit of coffee, stealing a taste off of a spoon and nodding my approval. Mrs. Caroline had cut each roll, and carefully lined dish after dish across the island with them. Wolves eat a lot, triple what a human would, so we were used to cooking in bulk. She began frying large slabs of bacon, just as my parents waltzed in the doors. They were in their own world, completely. Colten and I groaned as they smothered each other in affection. My mother gracefully made her way around the counter to me, placing a kiss firmly on my forehead. "Anna Claire for heavens sake when will you find something better to do than play in the kitchen?" My mother was not one to get her hands dirty, and wished I wouldn't either. I rolled my eyes silently, not responding. "We have visitors today, my Anna." Father spoke up. "Mhm..." I focused on the icing. “Alpha Wyatt will be here any moment." I glanced up from the mixer. This was news. It wasn't often The Alpha King left his pack, much less visited others. "For what reason?" I hoisted the massive bowl of icing, pouring it over the pans of cinnamon rolls. "Honestly, We aren’t sure. But, if you would manage to clean up a tad?" I rolled my eyes again, just as my mother chimed in. "What would they think of the Alpha's daughter! Not much, She's hidden under layers of baking flour." She scoffed, I sighed. "As soon as I am finished, I will change. Rest assured." She huffed in annoyance. I continued pouring, but lost control of the bowl as a ground shaking rumble errupted from the next room. Icing flew through the air, coating my hair, the ceiling, the walls. Mother screeched as icing coated her face as well. Colten laughed just as a large glob fell from the ceiling onto his head. The rumble gained volume as thunderous steps echoed towards the kitchen. The doors flew open, reveiling a massive, perfectly sculpted ominous looking male. He had to be a least seven foot tall. He sniffed the air hungrily, whipping his head to look at me His eyes were solid black- meaning his wolf was in control. We stared intensly at each other, my body unable to move. “Mate!" he boomed, stalking towards me. Panic settled in as I realized he was talking about me. My mother gasped, and it was then I glanced around me, realizing I was the only one still standing. Everyone else, mother and father, were on their knees on the ground, showing pure submission. Fear laced throughout me instantly as I realized the amount of disrespect I was showing in front of everyone. But I found myself unable to move, my body seemed frozen in place. Surely, I was about to die. The fuming man was standing directly in front of me, power rippling off of him in waves. It should have brought me to my knees, my wolf should have forced me to submit. But here I was, covered in icing. Looking up through my blonde lashes at the furious Alpha King towering over me, I tried to recognize the bond he was proclaiming, but there was nothing. There was no enticing smell, no instant recognition from my wolf. I hesitated, my wolf too was perplexed, she watched intently from the depths of my mind but neither confirmed nor denied his proclamation. He growled, his black eyes peering down expectantly. “What is your name, little wolf?” He shuddered as his finger touched my chin, but I remained stone faced, confused. No sparks ignited as they should have. Instead, a stench sent me reeling. My head became dizzy and the rancid smell overwhelmed my senses, and not in a way that indicates finding your mate. I turned towards the trash bin and emptied the contents of my stomach. Small gasps erupted from those present in the kitchen. I was horrified. The smell continued to permeate the air, and I began to back away from the giant tower of a man in front of me. He looked at me perplexed and started forward, growling. It was then I noticed that he had others behind him, and another massive being reached around him to put his hand on the Alpha King’s chest to stop him. The second man’s eyes glazed over, clearly linking with the King. Fury rolled off the King, but whatever was said to him stopped him from continuing after me. He turned towards my father, who bowed his head but stood slowly. They began speaking but I understood nothing, my knees gave out and my limbs burned as I blacked out completely.
