“To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?” my uncle asked, his voice warm with curiosity as he welcomed me.
I stepped forward, and he opened his arms, pulling me into a firm and familiar hug. For a moment, the weight on my shoulders eased. Uncle George, my father’s younger brother, had always been a steady and reliable person I could run to. He is untouched by the greed and games that infected so many people in our line of business.
He and my father had built their empires side by side, brick by brick, and when my father passed away, it was Uncle George who made sure I didn’t lose everything. He gathered what was left, put it in my hands, and stood back, not to disappear, but to let me lead while he helped me when it was needed.
