Emily and Max walked through the woods, their feet aching from the long journey.
They had been walking for hours, and the sun was beginning to set.
As they rounded a bend, they stumbled upon a small village.
They were surprised to see people living in the woods, and their curiosity got the best of them.
As they entered the village, they saw children playing and women cooking.
The smell of freshly baked bread wafted through the air, making their stomachs growl.
An elderly man approached them, smiling.
"Welcome, travelers," he said. "We don't often get visitors here."
Emily and Max explained their situation, and the elderly man listened intently.
"I think I can help you," he said. "My name is John, and I've lived here all my life."
John took them to his hut and offered them food and drink.
Emily and Max gratefully accepted, devouring the bread and cheese.
As they ate, John told them about the village.
"We've lived here for generations," he said. "We're a peaceful people."
But as the conversation went on, Emily sensed a hint of sadness in John's voice.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
John's expression turned serious.
"We're in danger," he said. "A darkness is growing in the woods."
Max's eyes narrowed.
"What kind of darkness?" he asked.
John hesitated.
"I'm not sure," he said. "But it's getting closer."
Emily felt a shiver run down her spine.
They had to find out more.
"Can you help us?" she asked.
John nodded.
"I can show you the way," he said. "But you have to be careful."
John took them to a small room in the back of his hut.
Inside, there was a large map of the woods.
"This is where you are," John said, pointing to a small X.
"And this is where you need to go."
He pointed to a location deep in the woods.
"What's there?" Max asked.
John's expression turned serious.
"The Guardian," he said. "The one who protects the woods."
Emily's eyes widened.
They had never heard of the Guardian.
But they knew they had to find out more.
"Tell us more," Emily said.
John nodded.
"The Guardian is a powerful being," he said. "It's been watching over the woods for centuries."
"But what does it have to do with us?" Max asked.
John hesitated.
"I'm not sure," he said. "But I think it's the only one who can help you."
