Chapter 8: The Stranger in the Woods

402 Words
Emily hid behind the tree, her heart racing. She didn't know what to do. As she waited, she heard a rustling in the bushes. Out came a boy, about her age, with messy brown hair and bright blue eyes. "Who are you?" Emily asked, trying to sound brave. The boy smirked. "I'm Max. And you are...?" Emily bristled at his tone. "I'm Emily. And I don't need your help." Max raised an eyebrow. "Oh, really? You look like you could use some help." Emily glared at him. "I can take care of myself." Max shrugged. "Suit yourself. But you're not going anywhere until you tell me what's going on." Emily hesitated, unsure if she could trust him. But something about Max's confident attitude annoyed her. "I'm not telling you anything," Emily said, crossing her arms. Max snorted. "Fine. Be that way." And with that, he turned and walked away. Emily watched him go, feeling a mix of relief and annoyance. She didn't need some arrogant boy trying to help her. But as she turned to leave, she realized she was lost. The woods looked different in the fading light. And then she heard a rustling behind her. "Need help now?" Max said, smirking. Emily glared at him. "No." But Max just chuckled and walked past her. "Follow me," he said. Emily hesitated, but her fear of the woods won out. She followed Max, her eyes fixed on his back. As they walked, the silence between them grew thicker. Emily couldn't believe she was stuck with this annoying boy. But as the darkness deepened, she realized she had no choice. And then Max stopped, his eyes scanning the woods. "What is it?" Emily asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Max turned to her, his expression serious. "We're not alone," he said. Emily's heart raced as she saw a figure lurking in the shadows. And then everything went black. When Emily came to, she was lying on the ground, her head throbbing. Max was kneeling beside her, his eyes filled with concern. "Emily, wake up," he said, shaking her gently. Emily groggily sat up, her mind foggy. "What happened?" she asked. Max helped her to her feet. "I don't know. But we need to get out of here." As they walked, Emily realized that Max wasn't so bad. In fact, she was starting to like him. But she wasn't going to admit it.
