Bound by Blood and Moonlight

Chapter 4: Bound by Blood and Moonlight The full moon hung low in the ink-black sky, casting a silver glow over the forest like a silent witness to forbidden rites. Samantha stood barefoot in the damp grass, her gown torn at the hem, her breath fogging in the chill of the night. She had followed the pull—an invisible thread tugging at her soul, dragging her deeper into the woods behind the Huxley estate. She didn’t know why she obeyed it. All she knew was that something ancient, primal, and undeniable had awakened inside her. Then she saw him. Leonard stood across the clearing, his shirt half-unbuttoned, chest rising with labored breaths. His eyes—normally sharp and emotionless—were glowing a molten gold. No longer just the cold billionaire alpha who’d forced her into a contract marriage. No, tonight he was something else. Something more. “Do you feel it too?” His voice was husky, strained. Like he was struggling to hold something back. Samantha’s heart thundered against her ribs. “What… what is happening to me?” He took a slow step forward, and the ground beneath her feet seemed to shift with the weight of his presence. “You’re changing. Your blood… it’s not fully human.” Samantha’s breath caught. “That’s impossible. I’m not—” “Yes, you are,” he cut in, eyes burning into hers. “Your father… he wasn’t just a hunter. He was once one of us. Exiled. He hid you to protect you.” Her knees weakened. The world tilted. The pieces began falling into place—the heightened senses, the vivid dreams, the unexplainable connection to Leonard. “You’re lying,” she whispered, though her voice trembled with doubt. Leonard moved even closer. “I wish I were.” Samantha took a step back, but the moon above pulsed, and the pull inside her grew unbearable. “Then why drag me into this marriage? Why force me here if you already knew?” He let out a slow exhale, the edge of a growl in his throat. “Because you’re my mate, Samantha.” The words struck her like lightning. A thousand thoughts collided in her head. No. No, that couldn’t be. They were bound by a contract. Not fate. But even as she denied it, something deep within her surged—recognition, desire, terror. She clutched her stomach, suddenly aware of a searing heat spreading through her chest. Her skin shimmered under the moonlight, the change pushing at the edges of her control. “I don’t want this,” she gasped. “I never asked for any of this!” “I didn’t either,” Leonard growled. “But fate doesn’t ask for permission.” His voice cracked on the last word. Suddenly, he was in front of her, grabbing her wrist as she stumbled. “You’re going to shift. Your first time—it’ll hurt.” Her breath hitched. “Shift?” “Your wolf is waking.” Samantha shook her head violently. “I’m not—!” Her scream tore through the night as her knees buckled. A wave of pain exploded in her spine, her bones stretching, twisting. She fell forward, hands digging into the soil. Leonard was beside her instantly, kneeling, hands on her shoulders. “Breathe, Samantha. Breathe through it.” Every nerve in her body burned. She felt like she was being torn apart and reborn in the same breath. Through the haze of agony, she saw the moon pulse again—and something inside her answered. She didn’t remember shifting. Only the moment after. She was on all fours, panting. Her limbs no longer human. Her vision sharper, senses amplified. The world was vibrant and raw. And in front of her, Leonard had shifted too—his powerful black wolf form standing guard. She saw the recognition in his golden eyes. Two wolves. Two fated souls. Bound by blood. By moonlight. By a future neither could escape. They circled each other once, then twice. The tension between them sizzled like lightning before a storm. Samantha felt her instincts roaring to the surface—fight or flight. But something stopped her. His presence. He wasn’t just protecting her. He was claiming her. But even as their wolves howled together into the moonlight, somewhere deep inside, Samantha knew this was just the beginning. The contract marriage had only been a smokescreen. Whatever fate had planned for them… it would be much, much darker. And far more dangerous.
