Chapter 6: Hunted in the Shadows
The night was still and breathless, but Samantha couldn’t shake the feeling that something—or someone—was watching her.
She stood by the open window of her room in the Alpha’s estate, eyes fixed on the silver-lit forest beyond. The moon was full again, hovering low like a watchful eye. It had been three days since the blood pact was made, but the effects were growing stronger. Her senses were sharper. Her dreams had become vivid—terrifyingly so. Each night, she would see flashes of blood, of claws tearing through flesh, and always the same set of golden eyes burning into her soul.
Leonard’s eyes.
She had tried to avoid him since their pact, but it was impossible. The Alpha’s presence lingered in every hallway, in every whispered conversation among the pack. And worse, every time she breathed, she could feel the echo of their bond calling to her like a ghost tethered to her skin.
Samantha turned from the window, pulling the curtains shut.
She needed to get out.
⸻
The forest was colder than she expected. Mist crept around her ankles like fingers. The moment her boots touched the mossy ground, she felt a strange pull in her chest—a warning, maybe, or something deeper. But she ignored it. She had to clear her mind, to escape the suffocating walls of the estate and the constant reminders of what she had become.
Snap.
She froze.
A branch broke behind her.
She turned. “Hello?”
No answer. Only the whisper of wind in the trees.
Her breath quickened. She wasn’t alone.
Suddenly, a low growl echoed through the darkness. Her heart slammed against her ribs. “Leonard?” she called, her voice shaking.
But she knew—this wasn’t him.
A figure emerged from the shadows. Not fully wolf, not fully human. Its eyes glowed red, and its mouth curled in a twisted snarl.
A rogue.
Samantha stumbled back.
The creature lunged.
But before it could reach her, a massive black wolf shot out from the trees, slamming the rogue to the ground. Fur and fangs clashed violently as the two beasts wrestled, snarling and howling under the moonlight.
Samantha gasped, eyes wide.
The black wolf turned its head—and she knew.
Leonard.
With a final snap of his jaws, the Alpha pinned the rogue, his teeth at its throat. A growl vibrated through the ground.
Then silence.
The rogue whimpered and went still.
Leonard rose, blood dripping from his snout. His form shimmered, and within seconds, he stood before her—bare-chested, covered in scratches, his golden eyes burning.
“What the hell were you doing out here?” he growled.
“I—I needed to breathe,” she stammered. “I didn’t know—”
“You could’ve been killed,” he snapped, stepping closer.
Samantha felt the bond between them surge. Her heart raced, not just from fear, but something else. Something dangerously electric.
“You marked me, remember?” she said bitterly. “I thought that meant I wasn’t yours to kill.”
Leonard’s eyes darkened. “No one touches what’s mine.”
She glared. “I’m not a possession.”
“You’re a bonded mate under Alpha protection,” he snarled. “And whether you like it or not, this forest is no longer safe for someone like you.”
“Someone like me?” she challenged.
“A human. Weak. Fragile. Breakable.”
His words hit her like a slap, but she didn’t flinch. Instead, she lifted her chin. “Then teach me not to break.”
Silence.
The air between them sparked.
For a moment, Leonard looked stunned. Then slowly, something shifted in his gaze. Respect. Or something dangerously close to desire.
“You’re not ready,” he muttered.
“But I will be.”
He stepped even closer. “Be careful what you wish for, Samantha. In this world, strength comes at a cost.”
“And I’m already paying it.”
They stood only inches apart. The forest fell silent again, but the tension crackled like fire.
Leonard reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. His touch sent a shiver down her spine. “Next time you want air,” he said, voice low, “you come to me first. I’ll decide where you can go.”
She didn’t move. “I’m not yours to command.”
“Not yet,” he whispered. “But you will be.”
